This comes from the AmericanCatholic.org website

Ash Wednesday history

Like the girl above me states, it's not something that is in the Bible that says we have to do this. Most Catholic rituals are not in the Bible because they have started over time. Communion isn't technically in the Bible either but the Last Supper is with the sharing of the bread and wine (body and blood of Christ) and we replicate that in Mass. Well in a way, I guess it is because I think Jesus says 'do this in memory of me'. But going to Mass isn't something stipulated in the Bible either. After Jesus' death and resurrection, his followers got together to pray and take Communion and that is how Mass evolved.

Getting ashes is symbolic of the start of this Holy Season and it's symbolic of our faith and I think that's why Catholics choose to do it.
