I think I've always written Mr. and Mrs. xxxxxx.
I never knew what to do though - still don't.

Re: who's name is on the ck
I have either given cash, or written the check to cash. When FH's brother was married, he and his wife didn't have a joint acct, and neither of their banks took the checks to Mr & Mrs.

for our wedding, 98% of the checks we got were to Mr & Mrs. the rest were either made out to me or him.
most couples who are engaged have a joint checking. if they don't, it is very easy to open one.

I put Mr. so and so and Mrs. bride's maiden name because you never know if she's done her paper work or if she decided not to change her last name.

Yea, but if you make it out to cash and it gets 'lost' then anyone can cash it.

Re: who's name is on the ck
This was a big issue for us. We didn't have a joint account before the wedding. Before the wedding we received some checks to John H. and Hollie P. They made me go home, get John and have him sign the check, since it didn't say John OR Hollie. DH had to come to the bank and open an account, after the wedding, which isn't such a big deal. Then they made us both sign the checks, because I haven't changed my name yet. They refused to accept a check that said Mr. & Mrs. from just me. They a lso refused to accept some checks where people hyphenated my name, since they said that wasn't legally my name yet (didn't have the marriage license).
As a result, I will be making any future checks out to Mr. John Smith and Ms. Jane Doe.

98% of our checks were made out to Mr and Mrs. We opened a joint account the day after the wedding, and even though I obviously hadn't changed my name legally yet, the bank had no problem with me signing my new name to the checks.

Same goes with cash. At our engagement party 90% of our monetary gifts were cash.

Re: who's name is on the ck
If it says Mr. and Mrs. His name, he should be able to deposit it into any account that has his name on it. Or you can just put both of their names on it, that seems to be the easiest way to avoid a problem.

Of all the checks we got, 95% were made out to Mr and Mrs D. I don't have anything identifying me as Mrs D so I had to sign Gina M and Gina D on every check. I doesn't matter if you don't have a joint account, just both sign the back and deposit it into the account with the name on the check....at least that's what Astoria Federal does...

Re: who's name is on the ck
I usually write it out to Mr. and Mrs. XXX but, after reading some other posts here, I think I'm going to change that. No woman can become Mrs. XXX that quickly legally and some banks seem to have issues with that!

for those of you who had a problem with cashing the checks made out to Mr & Mrs., What bank do you use? Maybe some are stricter than others

It's really not a big deal, obviously the banks have run into this situation, so they make the bride do extra work by signing both names....as usual!
