they probably want to make sure that the home is safe. Even if they don't think the parents did anything i guess in those cases they would rather be safe than sorry. It's so sad because i'm sure it was an accident and this must be making the parents feel 10Xs worse if that's even possible.. lose 2 children..what a sin!.. but i guess they don't want to take a chance.. maybe they felt the child shouldn't have been unsupervised. Or maybe the pool wasn't fenced it... i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be if there are children in the home. :( poor family.. i can't even imagine what they are going through!

well, why didn't they take the 11 year old too? He's old enough to fend for himself?

it's probably the proper protocol in a situation like this. I'm not saying it's right but they have to look out for the best interest of the other children, which IMO is with their parents but the state (or who ever did this) probably has to investigate to make sure the living situation for the child is safe. It's all very sad, I can't imagine what the parents are going through.

Sorry, no answer for that one, I would have assumed they took all the children

thats horrible...they may be concerned that the 11 year old did something....but how the hell do you say ' we were busy doing our own things while it happend.?????

thats really sad...

but why would the dad say 'we were too busy doing our own thing to notice' too busy to look after your children? That is admitting negligence. I dont know, in that case, maybe it is better (for the time being) until investigation is done, that they took the baby. Doesnt sound like a safe atmosphere for a 1 year old baby who is learning to walk, getting into things, exploring etc.

for the family

That is soo sad.. It might be standard procedure until the investigation is over. Plus I don't understand how the little girl could have gotten to the pool, it should be gated off for this not to happen, my parents town has a law that you must have a fence and lock on every surrounding pool.

I completely agree. It's so sad that that's almost verbatim what he said.

I read on newsday.com they did it for her own protection b/c when the other little girl drowned that parents were inside not paying attention, either way its so sad

Yeah I think thought the same thing when I read that part...doing your own thing, you couldn't watch your child??? maybe its a good thing they took the baby

I work in child protection for NYC and you all are very right, It is strange that they would remove one child and not both. It is assumed that if a parent can not provide a minimum degree of care for one child that they would not be able to exercise it for all.

The only thing that I could think of is that perhaps as the parents do not have a fence for the pool that rather than risk the other child having access to the pool until proper measures are taken they may have taken her into protective care. I assure everyone however, all relatives are explored as caregivers and given preferrence over foster parents, so if they have responsible family then she is with them.

Not that it makes it any easier.....

OH and let me add in defense of people who do the work that I do (we're not the most popular people you know )

Removing ANY child from their family is a absolute last resort and mainly hinges on how amendable a family is to making their children safe and taking ownership of the situation. The father's comment to reporters may be some insight into his attitude about he whole thing. But again, no one wants to separate a family particularly during a time of grief such as this. To remove a child you have to go to court and defend the reason you think there is imminent danger to a judge. There had to be a really god reason.

We are putting an inground pool, I dont want it, and i am soooooo scared of something like this happening to us. We have a 2 year old next door, and a newborn and 6 month old across the street.

With all these pool deaths lately, im just sooo soooo scared of this happening.
