I'm just wondering why everyone is changing their name? I was reading the thread about who will miss their last name, and so many people seem sad about it....we don't have to change our names, so if you don't want to why do it?
I haven't decided what to do, I'm keeping mine for now and will think about it after the wedding.
I'm in no way criticizing...I'm just wondering because I'm trying to decide myself!........

I am changing my name because I want to. I am starting a new family when I get married. I want to share the same last name with my family.

I changed my name because I wanted to. I am starting a new family with my husband. It doesn't bother me at all.

I want my children to ahve the same last name as my FH and I, the only reasons why I was not thinking about changin my last name, ws becaseu my CPA license and degrees are in my maiden name.
It seemed silly to kepp it only for that reason, and my FH was put off as to why I would not want to take his name.

Same as Boop. I have had a REALLY hard time about making this decision. It's not that I don't want FI's last name it's just that I LOVE mine. It's who I am. BUT, I do want a family and it is important (to me and me only) that we have a common bond. i had it with my mom and dad and I want my kids to feel the same way.

Because it's tradition, because I want my kids and their parents to all have the last name and....
because my real father was a drunken deadbeat who disappeared on us for years and who has two brothers who robbed their elderly mother blind while she was unable to care for herself and left her to die (they didn't find her until 3 days after she died b/c they were either too high to go check on her or just didn't care). Because I have the same last name as all of them and I'm through. Done with them.
I'm in a really crappy mood today and I know you were just asking a question. But I have gotten this question before from 'career women' who want to know why I'm changing mine. Like it's almost starting to get looked down upon in some ways.

I think it is a very personal choice that everyone has to make for there own cirmcumstances. My family divorced twice and growing up no one had the same name. Not a big deal but it was always a little confusing at school..(Who is this person picking you up?) I am really looking forward to being the x's or the x family as cheesy as that may sound! Especially given my background i don't think having one name at ALLL makes you a family but for me it was just an easy decision. Also I am not super close to my dad's family so my name now is not that hard to lose. I have alot of friends who felt very strong about keeping there name and I say do what your heart tells you to and don't worry about anyone else!

For the children. Its confusing to have your parents with two different last names. And its tradition.

Thrilled, I'm sorry you had this experience, but as I mentioned, I was in no way criticizing or 'looking down'. I just saw so many sad faces on the other thread that I was wondering what peoples decisions were based on. Since I'm still making up my mind, I wanted to hear the positive sides of why people were doing this....!

Thrilled.....I have had those same comments / looks from 'career women'....and another good one is 'why did you go to college if you want to stay home with the kids one day?' HELLO - can't I be an educated mother? !! LOL And I dont know what my circumstances will be if we can afford for me to stay home or not!

I dont think I ever really considered not changing my name, as I want our children to have the same last name as me, to me that represents a family. The reason my last name means so much to me is that it represents my wonderful family, and my new last name will represent my new family w. FH. Plus, it means a lot to FH and his family. That said, I like the sound of my last name better than FHs. I will miss it. But, I figure over time, I will get used to my new name, and stop looking for FHs mom everytime someone calls me Mrs K

Sorry that you're having a bad day Thrilled I hope it gets better. I can't know what you're going through for sure, but your dad's brothers sound almost exactly like my dad's brother. I haven't seen him since I was a child b/c the family shunned him...he bilked grandma out of every dime she had and spent it on drugs....She passed away a few years ago, and that could have been avoided too in my opinion....
