Why is everyone changing their name?

Original post by julybride444

I'm just wondering why everyone is changing their name? I was reading the thread about who will miss their last name, and so many people seem sad about it....we don't have to change our names, so if you don't want to why do it?

I haven't decided what to do, I'm keeping mine for now and will think about it after the wedding.

I'm in no way criticizing...I'm just wondering because I'm trying to decide myself!........

Re: Why is everyone changing their name?

For work I have kept my name but socially I go by my husband's. I thought this was a good compromise for now but I see myself changing it to his in the future.

I have been married three months- I have not changed my name yet- and I don't 'go' by my married name... but really- who the heck calls me by my last name anyway? the bill collectors? f them....! Basically I am just too busy at work to take a 1/2 day of running around to different slow government bureaus. I will change it when I get pregnant and am raising a family... but as for now.. I'm leaving it.

I didn't change my name because it just isn't me to change my name. I actually sort of get annoyed when people assume I did change my name, like I was supposed to. I don't think it is confusing for children to have parents with 2 different names, nor do I think for my DH and I that it will make us more like a family to all have the same last name. But that is the beauty of having choices- and regardless of whether you change your name or not, I bet most of us are just glad we have the choice. Because it wasn't long ago that women weren't even having this conversation. In my opinion that is the essence of feminism (if that is what you want to call it)- it is having the choice, not what choice you make.

I have 2 reasons, one a little more personal than the other.

1) Like others have said to have the same name as my new family once we have kids

2) My parents divorced 3 months after I was born and I've had virtually no relationship with my father or his family my entire life. I'm not part of his family so I feel no obligation at all to keep his name. I'd rather take my new husband's name.

I am changing my name because it is what I feel will properly announce my identity.

I am releasing my previous last name (of my estranged father) and replacing it with a hyphenated Mother'smaidenname-FHlastname.

It was completely by choice, and quite honestly something I did not forsee myself doing.

I guess when you know who you are meant to be with, your POV changes

I agree with boop - couldn't have said it better myself.

I am changing my name to FH just because I want to. There will be no children involved and FH wouldn't mind if I didn't change my name but I don't really like. It isa very Italian name and I relate more to the Irish in me. So I have decided to change my name to FH's!

BTW, I have a question.....

If you hyphenate your last names do you have to sign both names when signing legal documents?

1)For me it is getting rid of a family name that I don't want -- like Thrilled

2) It is for the kids! I have had strange expierences with that as a teacher

3) I hate it

4) I hate it

5) I hate it

6) I hate it

7) I hate it

etc etc etc

Re: Why is everyone changing their name?

I've never really considered changing my name. I've always been who I am, so strange to change it. I've been told that the tradition of a woman changing her name dates back to when women were property, and the name change indicated a change of 'ownership' in a sense. Don't know if it's true or not.
Why don't more men change their last name? Maybe I'll ask FH! (hee-hee)

Like everyone said, all a matter of choice.

Re: Why is everyone changing their name?

Well, I wanted to start a new life with my husband. I wanted to start fresh as well. I was very honored to carry his name as our own family. Starting a family doesn't have to begin with having children, to me it begins by getting married. I also hate my maiden name. My father doesn't have a good family background and my mother's family associate my maiden name with that. I was constantly looked down upon by my mother's side of her family with my maiden name. I hated being categorized and being associated by my maiden name with my father's side as that. Changing it was theapretic for me and cleansing my history and was very refreshing for a brand new me.

i'm not changing my name. i like my name the way it is and i don't see the point in changing it. i think we will be a family no matter what last names we have. and honestly i don't see how it's confusing for kids. just because mommy got married doesn't mean she wanted to give up the identity she was born with. most likely though all my kids will have my last name as their middle names, so they'll have two last names too, sortof.

I was sad about changing my last name. Now I am happy I did. I feel as though it was a new begining for me. It made me feek refreshed.

I can't wait to change my name! His name is so beautiful and easy...mine is very very very long, and no one can ever pronounce it...it has every uncommon consonant smushed together!

Re: Why is everyone changing their name?

I really do not want to change my name. My name represents part of my culture and I will be so unhappy to give that up. But like others and Sassyz75, I want us to have the same name when we have kids. FI and I have thought about taking parts of our name to combine one new name. I'm not sure how FI's family would feel about that- they may be offended. :-(

We talked about hyphenating but my name is long to begin with and his is even longer. Plus, then kids will have his name and not mine. It is important to me to pass some of my culture to my kids- esp since I am marrying out of my heritage.

Re: Why is everyone changing their name?

I hypenated my last name, but not at work. The ONLY reason I did it was because if your legal name is still your maiden name only then your health insurance will also be in your maiden name. When you have a child the braclet and paperwork will only use your maiden name. NOT the baby's last name, but the little braclets you have to wear. I didn't like that idea since our child will have DH's last name. And I felt bad for DH that his child's paperwork/braclet would not have his last name on it too. So now the little braclet will have my hypentated last name.

Honestly I love having my name still. And DH never cared either way. He knows I love him and doesn't need me to prove it to him.

I am changing my name. I am honored to take my FI's name. I can't really come up with a reason why I'm doing it but it's something I want to do. However, I will miss my last name because it does represent my cultural background. My initials will not change with my married name and I barely move down the alphabetical list.

Kathy that is hysterical how you describe your last name. I used to be so proud that I could spell it!

I am not as happy about my name change...I am moving on to a very commom name that I don't really like.

Re: Why is everyone changing their name?

I mentioned in the other thread that I was sad...but that doesn't mean that I didn't want to change it...

I had that name for 28 years...and then all of a sudden...one day...I have a new last name...its definitely a strange experience...my initials are different...new signiture...

DH was very open to me hyphenating...not sure about keeping my name...but I do want to share a family name...whatever last name it be...
