it depends on the DJ, some use different equipment...For example starlight express is more money but they don't use Dj equipment they use concert equipment. They have a tech guy who was on tour with alot of rock concerts who comes to your Rh, gets dimensions of the room and finds out how many guests you have so they can compact concert sound into the room. Also their lighting is different, the beams they have for them are different than the lights alot of others use.

Others not sure why bc i didn't check them out so can't say.

But just shop around and go with your gut and what you're comfortable with

Well, just remember that more expensive doesn't necessarily = better services. Some people are just over-priced! Don't be afraid to check out those who actually offer a fair price.
Good luck!!!

All I can say is that FH and I visited with Body Rock last night and met with a really nice woman and we were completely turned off when we told her that we wanted to create our own photo montage (even though it comes with the two plasma screens package) and she literally said to us 'I've got to be honest with you, since you're getting married on a holiday, if I have a couple who wants the complete package on that date, I'm going to give the tvs to the other couple - it's just business.' And then added that we would need a whole other guy to run the plasmas - whereas with other DJ companies (especially the smaller ones, like FM Entertainment) they are more willing to work with you because usually it's the owner himself who is out there doing these weddings and meeting with the couples, and ultimately is looking to grow to be what those larger DJ companies are. So if I were you, I would base my decision on someone who has a very good reputation and not consider the cost as much.

I've heard a lot of good things about FM...

I went with Starlight Express, they weren't much more then many other DJ's for the package I wanted, but their quality of equipment and knowledge of the business are well worth the extra few $$! Someone else posted about their concert equipment and engineer...I was so blown away with this stuff I couldn't help but book them on the spot!

I really think a lot of times you get what you pay for, so be careful, make sure the DJ has what you are looking for, music wise and knowlege wise....I felt a lot of the cheaper guys I went to were cheezy and I felt like I was throwing a school dance, not planning my wedding!

Re: why is it..

When I was searching for a DJ I met with Starlight Express, MGM Productions and Body Rock.

I was so impressed with Starlight Express and their equipment and how personable Vinny (the owner) was that i couldn't help but book with them after meeting the other companies.

I must tell you though when I was meeting with MGM Productions (located across from Russo's on the Bay), there was a wedding going on at Russo's and the man who works for MGM got a phone call from Russo's as me and my mom were sitting in front of his desk asking if he could supply a dj for the wedding that was going on RIGHT NOW AT THAT MOMENT. Apparently whatever DJ the bride & groom went with never showed up at the wedding. That's when the man at MGM mentioned ot me about people booking these small companies for less money and then they take the money and then never show up to the affair. I felt terrible for the bride and groom when I heard this and MGM was able to get someone to work that wedding right away. Russo's knows the guy at MGM and this is why they called him.

I really believe you get what you pay for. I am not saying FM Entertainment is like this b/c I never met them. I am just stating what happend and what I was witness too as I was sitting meeting with a dj company.

Good lord...that's absurd! I can't believe what comes out of vendors' mouths sometimes

I booked with FM Entertainment. I met with them and went to one of their showcases and thought they were great. And they have wonderful reviews on here. Go with the company you feel the most comfortable with, but do your research.

Sometimes you do get what you pay for, but sometimes you don't get nearly enough for what you pay!

Re: why is it..

we booked with In the Mixx - who is also lower priced.

We weren't sure what the difference really was either, so we went with a cheaper option.

If we can't tell, we figured our guests wouldn't be able to either.

I think it also depends on if there are extras, lighting etc. All we wanted was one guy to play music, no mc, no extras--simple. And, we found exactly what we wanted. I think there's something for everyone. When you call places, be very specific and clear in what you're looking for. What they tell you should be a good indicator of whether or not it's a good fit.

what are you looking for in your package? just music or lighting and other stuff? i am using body rock, i have only heard great things about them, and i think i got a good price for their basic, dj/mc/music only package (aout 1700).

i agree with Denise---it can be about the equipment they use, higher end equipment can mean higher prices. my DJ was amazing---and a lot of it was due to the equipment they used. the owner of the company actually built the equipment he used himself, and customized the CPU for the music that is played at the reception.

i paid a good amount for our package--but for us--it was worth it. we felt comfortable with the DJ and knew we wouldn't feel as good about any other vendor as we did them!

We met one DJ in a lovely building in a prime location, 3 offices and a reception room.
The DJ we talked to next met us at a diner, and offered us the better lighting for free. Since no one else had booked the date yet, we'll get the owner at our wedding. Total package: $3000 less.

I assure you, the $3000 difference would only pay one months rent for the first company. And god knows who they'd send.

I agree. Alot of the extra costs are sometimes simply just overhead...rent, advertising, staff, etc. Don't let the price reflect quality or service. Go with who you feel is the right choice, not on who costs the most.

BTW, I went with FM entertainment. It was the right fit for us.

well said!!
I visited 3 or 4 djs before i booked.. sometimes those that are more $$..for the most part are more because your cost is covering the nice office, the receptionist, plasma TVs to show you demos and all the other overhead costs they have that most let's call them smaller DJ companies do not have... so more $$ doesnt necessarily mean better...

this is the same with florists too i noticed in my search...

someones gotta cover their overhead costs!!

so go with who you feel comfortable..
