I started actually watching Gilmore Girls and remember thinking- what are they doing in Italy???

well, they were in italy because rory slept w/ dean and was trying to get away from that, and from her mother since loreli did not approve of her sleeping with a married man...

did you see the rest of the episode? cuz rory wrote dean a letter and his wife found it, and threw him out and now he regrets sleeping with her and it's just all a big mess!
