Yes you may find a Catholic Priest to perform your ceremony outside, but it WILL not be recognized by the church as a sacrament. In order for it to be recognized by the church it must take place in a church, in Gods House.

Yes, I was gonna say the same thing...its hard but you can find a priest who will do it outside....but your marriage will not be acknowledged by the Catholic Church.

Not true. I have the same exact church validity to my marriage as everyone else I know who got married in a church. We even took the papers to a new church when we moved in order to register with the new church and everything was a-ok.

Also,

'Church law requires Catholics and those persons they marry to exchange marital consent in the presence of a delegated priest or deacon and two witnesses for the validity of the marriage. While not required for validity, the place where the marriage is celebrated is also important to the Church. The significance of the place of marriage lies in the sacramental nature of the liturgy. While the bride and groom, baptized into the paschal mystery of Christ, symbolize the faithful and indissoluble union of Christ and his Church, the building itself serves as a sign of the entire Church. The church building is sacred space where the Church as people gathers in assembly. While family and friends who gather with the couple on that joyous day join them as the assembly of the praying Church, the building, in a real sacramental sense, symbolizes the presence of the larger Church—worldwide, diocesan, and parish. It is for this reason that the Church requires a Catholic—whether marrying another Catholic or a Christian—to be married in a parish church or oratory.'

reading that article just made me mad... i love how they consider it 'invalid' if its not in the church... give me a break... its things like that that make me realize how much bs the actual church is (although i do believe in god, just not the catholic church)

me & fh although both catholic, have received all the sacraments, we dont go to church, havent been in years and honestly, dont plan on going back anytime soon... for me, there is just too much corruption in the church to want to step foot inside it, let alone be married in 1...

so dont get married in one LOL no one is forcing you too and there are gorgeous ceremonies outside of the church

however, if you are a practicing Catholic then you would want to have your marriage recognized by the Vatican and you would get married in the church

why does every Church question have to turn into bashing the Church? i don't understand it and honestly, it just wouldn't fly if we were discussing any other faith

(( i am not ignoring the bride that got married outside of the church, that is awesome - i have just never heard of it before and i was told that it was never allowed))

eta: marriage is a sacrament - the only sacraments that you can receive outside of the church are the last rites due to obvious reasons. . .no one would ask to baptise their child in a meadow would they? or to have their first holy communion in a gazebo by the lake, same theory

Tilde,
I think the big problem is that Catholic and ROMAN CATHOLIC are two different things. The bride that was married in Atlantica by a priest was married by a reformed Catholic priest not a ROMAN CATHOLIC priest. There is quite a difference. I'm Roman Catholic, but just say Catholic. I'm going to start adding the Roman party when I speak from now on.
BTW, I agree it is not fair when others 'bash' our religion. I guess they feel it's okay b/c it's their religion too. I find it offensive.

Anyway, I just find it annoying

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! My thoughts exactly. So many couples have no problem with spending up to $5000 on flowers or $10,000 on favors but the Catholic church asks that you give $600 or a donation (for the church time, the priest's time, for the organist, the soloist, etc) and everyone gets into a bashing mode against the Church. Is the Catholic church the only one that requires a payment? Synagogue don't charge to get married in one? Don't halls many times charge extra to get married at the hall?

No one is making anyone get married by the Church. If you don't want to then don't but don't bash the church. I go to church because of my faith and my faith says the sacrament of marriage is to take place in the House of God then that is where it is to take place. There is corruption every where not just in the Catholic church, every religion, denomination has there issues. To be part of a Synagogue you have to pay for your family to be attend services and then you have to pay extra to get tickets for services on High Holy Days. In some Protestant churches, you are required to show them your paystub so they are sure to get their tithing. I just wish people would stop bashing the Catholic church, especially the media.

I think They will if one of you is Jewish or another religion. Sometimes a deacon will do it, but it depends on the parish...

wow...
In the same post you said you don't believe in the catholic church, which is obvious by your words, and then referred to yourself as a catholic. If you are going to make such bold statements, you should at the very least be consistant about it.
It's apparent you didn't think about what you were writing before you posted this as it is probably the most offensive post I've ever seen on this forum.

what do you mean BS? With EVERY religion there are beliefs and (for lack of a better term) RULES...

if you followed your faith you would undertand the rules. so why get pissed off about it? Just find another religion if it upsets you so much.

The preist marrying us is not 'roman catholic' he is part of the 'old catholic church'. So I guess Roman catholic won't recogniae our marriage as valid. However, our priest will also to baptisms etc. so if we have kids we'll probably have him do the baptisms.
FM if you want more info.

And I agree...
If God created the earth then why do you have to get married inside a building?

its sounds like maybe you haven't found the right church for you. like others have said, youre saying youre disgusted pretty much by the catholic church and yet you said you are catholic, which doesnt make much sense. there is nothing wrong with finding that your church doesnt 'feed you' spiritually, praying on guidance to where you belong, and finding another type of church for you (this is something similar to what i went through actually but thats a long and unrelated story), but just be mindful that when you go beyond voicing your opinion about a church to sort of bash it, it can be offensive and disrespectful to alot of ppl.

on another note, completely unrelated to the post i replied to...

there is an order of married catholic priests who marry outside of the church obviously. i am not offering this up for drama (as i know many will have differing opinions on this), but simply as an option for anyone who is interested and wants to read up on this.

Re: Will a Catholic Priest do an outdoor wedding?

However, if a Catholic enters marriage outside of the Catholic Church without the necessary dispensation, (again whether marrying a baptized non-Catholic or a non-baptized person), then the marriage is considered invalid and is not recognized by the Church. Moreover, this action places the person in a state of mortal sin, which in turn means that the person can no longer receive holy Communion. For instance, if a Catholic marrying either another Catholic or anyone else just decides to be married in some other Church or by a Justice of the Peace, that marriage is invalid. While such a marriage may have legal standing in the eyes of the state, it has no legitimate standing in the eyes of the Church.

There it is straight from the article. It does however say that in order for a catholic priest to over see a ceremony or have it be considered valid in the eyes of the church there has to be proper dispensation from the bishop. Otherwise it is not valid to the church.

On a different note: bashing the church and saying its BS is a touchy subject, while I feel you should be able to get married wherever you would like....that is the way it goes. Both DH and I have completed all of our sacraments in a church and that is the way we wanted it. There is no reason to talk about corruption in the church, etc. there are rules just like anywhere else. Dont want to deal with it~dont get married in a church its as simple as that. But it offends those of us who DID choose to get married in a church based on our beliefs and how we wanted it to be. That is almost as offensive as if I said I made a comment about someone getting married on the beach, or in a park or at their hall, to each his own

I don't think she meant to offend.....I guess it just gets frustrating when you want the church to recognize your love yet you HAVE to do it in a church. For those of us who want to do it elsewhere it gets frustrating because my thinking is that God created everything and I feel that He recognizes it. But I get the rules...but it gets frustrating.
