I'm worried that my guests will dress less fancy because I'm having an afternoon wedding. I dont women showing up in slacks and nice shirt for a wedding. Everyone keeps saying for TWOTY to dress for 'an afternoon wedding'. Does that mean an afternoon wedding is less elegant or less formal?
I wanted an afternoon wedding so we could end early and then go all night with the after party. But now I'm second-guessing myself because I'm afraid the vibe will be different. Help please!!!

not necessarily... i definitely have been to afternoon weddings and i usually assume less formal... but if you want your guests to be formal, you can say so on the invitation... for example, i am getting married on halloween and we are not doing a costume party... the invite will say, 'please, no costumes.'

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....
I would dress less formally for an afternoon wedding than a night wedding, but would certainly not wear slacks. Still formal, just not as formal. I think a night affair gives the impression that an affair is more 'black tie' than an afternoon affair. But by no means do I think an afternoon affair calls for informal dress.

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....
Maybe you could put 'Formal Attire' or something like that on your invite?
To be honest I wouldnt dress down for an afternoon wedding, but I might not necessarily dress up as much as I would if it were in the evening... if that makes any sense!

Traditionally afternoon weddings are less fancy. However, if you want semi-formal or black tie just have it written on your invitation.

I would dress a little less formally for a day wedding. Not slacks but certainly not an evening gown.

yeah i would say thats how i am. I would dress up no matter what but then also think about accessories, hair and make up and maybe not go as far as i would with an evening wedding bc might be a bit much for evening but thats also bc i tend to want to get overly dressed for weddings. But i would wear a dress no matter what, but a more simple but elegant dress and then probably would be just a little bit more simple with hair and make up but not where its too simple and i look like i can just be going out anywhere in the afternoon, still would look like i have an event to go to.

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....
Typically, unless there is language otherwise, I have seen that an afternoon wedding is 'semi formal'. I have even seen evening formal weddings where ladies wear slacks and a blouse, or slacks and a beaded top (for one wedding I went to).

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....
Personally, I would never wear slacks, but for an afternoon wedding I would dress less formal than for an evening wedding. But at the very least, I would still wear a nice cocktail style dress.

Afternoon weddings tend to be less formal than evening weddings. Women will usually wear simple styles and less jewelery and makeup.

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....
For afternoon weddings people tend to wear cocktail dresses and for an evening wedding people tend to wear long evening gowns. So im sure your guests will still come nicely dress for the afternoon. My cousin had a afternoon wedding and all guests wore nice cocktail dresses and the men wore suits. No one came in slacks.

When people say Cocktail style dress, are you talking one of the beaded, knee length gowns? that's what I think when I think of cocktail dresses.

A lot of girls on here DO think there is a difference in how to dress for an afternoon wedding. I had one and put 'Evening Attire Requested' at the bottom of my invite. Most people understood. I had some guests come in attire I did not think was 'evening' - but I honestly didn't care. I was just so happy to be at MY wedding.
But definitely put something on the invite! It made me stop worrying about it.

No -- I mean, yes, that's a cocktail dress too, but I think nowadays, when people say 'cocktail dress' they mean just a short dressy dress. I think of black when I hear the term, but I don't think it has to be black.

I agree! I think some people do dress a little differently than they would for an evening wedding. Usually it's more of a fun flirty type of dress.. like a shorter length cocktail dress nothing too fancy but yet still dressy. An evening wedding is usually more fomal with long gowns etc. I would mention Formal attire required or something on the invitations just incase. Usually people know how to dress based on where the wedding is... like an outdoors wedding in the middle of summer might not be as fancy. I don't think you should have too much of a problem with slacks or being being super dressed down. Although... has anyone ever seen My Big Redneck Wedding??!???!?!?!??! Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Now those people on the show....you might be scared of what they would come wearing!

YES exactly, cocktail dress doesnt have to have beads. Maybe a nice simple black dress or whatever color. Jersey fabric, or whatever. Last time i went to an afternoon wedding i wore a black knee length dress, that tied at the side, was kinda like a wrap around dress
the dress was similar to this, but the side part that is tied with thin strings

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....
I will dress the same regardless if it is an afternoon wedding or a night wedding...it is a wedding
