Will having an afternoon wedding....

Original post by SummerBride10

effect what my guests wear?

I'm worried that my guests will dress less fancy because I'm having an afternoon wedding. I dont women showing up in slacks and nice shirt for a wedding. Everyone keeps saying for TWOTY to dress for 'an afternoon wedding'. Does that mean an afternoon wedding is less elegant or less formal?

I wanted an afternoon wedding so we could end early and then go all night with the after party. But now I'm second-guessing myself because I'm afraid the vibe will be different. Help please!!!

I have not been to many weddings in my life, in fact, only 3. I don't count 2 of them, because at the first I was 8, and at the third I was the MOH! But the second was an afternoon wedding, and I wore a pale pink and black satin paisley halter dress, knee length, and was probably one of the more overdressed. In fact, I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed at times. But nothing compared to one girl, who clearly recycled an old BM gown, and not to be rude, but she looked like a fool.

I personally think that no matter what you request on the invitation, the general attitude of most people will be 'screw you I'll do what I want', and they'll show up wearing what they want anyways.

As a complete aside, I don't know how I feel about requesting black tie or formal...I know I don't own a gown, and I feel that's almost asking somebody that doesn't to buy an outfit for specifically one occasion. I don't know, I just probably wouldn't go out and buy a gown because the invite said to. I can put myself in the guest's position, and everyone should, because I think to expect too much isn't the best idea.

I have to say, I agree. If I saw an invitation stating 'Black tie optional' and the event was NOT being held at the Waldorf Astoria or something similar...I would roll my eyes. FH doesn't own a tux yet, to ask guests to go out and buy a tux is silly to me. I can understand for the Presidential Inaugural Ball....but short of that.

I'm sure people will be dressed properly. Don't stress over it. The important thing is that you will shine no matter what.

I agree with the black tie / formal request. That's what I wrote 'evening attire requested' -- I feel this lets people know, 'come as you would for an evening wedding.' You can also write 'Cocktail Attire Requested' - in case some people think 'Evening Attire' means 'Gown.' I was worried about people coming in khakis and casual button downs. Not the worst thing in the world, but not the look I wanted for pics, atmosphere ... and Evening Attire did the trick. But Cocktail Attire may have even been better looking back. I got some questions about what 'Evening Attire' was.

Thanks for all the input girls. I hate that people see an afternoon wedding as less formal. I really want to change the wedding to an evening wedding now...

I hear you -- I don't understand why it's any different. But don't worry. Add something to your invites like 'Cocktail Attire Requested' and it will be fine! And I PROMISE you - unless everyone comes in sundresses and dockers, you will NOT care. You will be so HAPPY and on cloud nine -- you will not give a shiit. Dh's friend's girlfriend came in this weird black dress and hooker shoes and we just laiughed and scratched our heads, and then went back to partying. It wasn't a surprise that she would dress like that anyhow. I wish we got a picture of it!!!!!

I hear you...I had a Sunday afternoon wedding and all the ladies wore dresses, but they were not dresses I think they would wear to an evening wedding. I was actually a little dismayed when I saw what a couple of women were wearing, even though it wasn't considered casual...but it passed very quickly...it's your wedding day and all eyes will be on you and DH! Afternoon weddings are definitely viewed as a less formal affair than evening weddings. But that doesn't mean that women will wear pants/slacks, and even if they do, it makes them look bad, not you. So don't worry....I chose the afternoon on purpose because my venue was on the water, and I wanted everyone to enjoy the view (why pay for a view of the water when you can't even see it?) and I had a beautiful day, and so will you !

Thank yoU! That's what I'm trying to tell myself- I'm not gonna spend my wedding day worrying about what everyone else is wearing so it shouldn't be a big deal.
