Will having an afternoon wedding....

Original post by SummerBride10

effect what my guests wear?

I'm worried that my guests will dress less fancy because I'm having an afternoon wedding. I dont women showing up in slacks and nice shirt for a wedding. Everyone keeps saying for TWOTY to dress for 'an afternoon wedding'. Does that mean an afternoon wedding is less elegant or less formal?

I wanted an afternoon wedding so we could end early and then go all night with the after party. But now I'm second-guessing myself because I'm afraid the vibe will be different. Help please!!!

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....

Personally I would dress just as nice for a day wedding as a night wedding, but unfortunately the reality is that I have been to afternoon weddings where there were guests who were IMO a little bit underdressed. I would put black tie optional on the invite or something to that nature just to calm any confusion

I defintely dress less formal for an afternoon event. It's common practice, evening events are always more formal than afternoon events - reguardless of what it is. It's not wrong that people don't dress up as much - day attire is different than evening attire, it's just the way it is.

Sorry to say, but most people will probably dress less formal because it's an afternoon event. You can add 'formal attire preferred' to your invite if you want it to be more formal. I personally would not wear pants to an afternoon wedding, but I'm sure there are people that would.

i personally would wear a gorgous evening gown to an evening wedding, and would be more simple in wearing a short dress for an afternoon wedding. I would still look as if I were attending a wedding.

There is a difference, just look at all the bridal magazines, Bree Turner's wedding was featured in the last issue of In Style...she had her gown cut to tea length because she thought that was appropriate for an 11:30 am wedding. While I'm sure most of us wont cut our gowns...it really delivers the point. Even the Bride modified her attire.

In Style Weddings

Judging from her photos, her guests were dressed very nice- mostly pastel and light colored dresses.

i personally would never wear slacks or a skirt to a wedding. but thats just me. i think to keep things clear you should write something on the invitation.

I have been to 2 afternoon weddings in the past few years, and I think people were dressed in appropriate clothes for any long island wedding. I wouldn't expect anyone to wear an evening gown...but then again I dont think most people wear an evening gown to most weddings. That may just be my opinion though.

i would never wear pants to any wedding but for an afternoon wedding i do dress less formal. usually to an evening wedding i always wear a dress thats to th efloor where to an afternoon wedding i tend to wear a more cocktail style dress.

I do dress differently for a daytime versus evening wedding. I wouldn't wear slacks though. A nice dress, but nothing too fancy is what I would normally wear to a daytime wedding.

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....

I have not been to many weddings in my life, in fact, only 3. I don't count 2 of them, because at the first I was 8, and at the third I was the MOH! But the second was an afternoon wedding, and I wore a pale pink and black satin paisley halter dress, knee length, and was probably one of the more overdressed. In fact, I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed at times. But nothing compared to one girl, who clearly recycled an old BM gown, and not to be rude, but she looked like a fool.

I personally think that no matter what you request on the invitation, the general attitude of most people will be 'screw you I'll do what I want', and they'll show up wearing what they want anyways.

As a complete aside, I don't know how I feel about requesting black tie or formal...I know I don't own a gown, and I feel that's almost asking somebody that doesn't to buy an outfit for specifically one occasion. I don't know, I just probably wouldn't go out and buy a gown because the invite said to. I can put myself in the guest's position, and everyone should, because I think to expect too much isn't the best idea.

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....

* I * wouldnt dress less formal BUT i think a lot of people will. they will think an afternoon wedding is more casual then an evening one.
im also the type of person that dresses nice for baby showers and bridal showers in dresses not slacks and stuff like that, so it could depend on the person.

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....

I'm sure women ppl would NOT wear slacks....you'd only hope that they have been to an afternoon wedding and have seen the appropriate dress before, and if they ever wore slacks they now know thats rediculous

Thanks for all the input girls. I hate that people see an afternoon wedding as less formal. I really want to change the wedding to an evening wedding now...

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....

I dont think it would be appropriate to wear slacks to ANY wedding....I would never. On the other hand Im not sure I would wear a full length gown to an afternoon wedding...but I would certaintly wear a dressy dress.

I wouldnt wear pants, but yes, I would def not be 'as dressy' as I would for a night time wedding. I would wear a way more simple dress, like a sundress, less makeup.

Re: Will having an afternoon wedding....

From experience, people definitely dress less fancy to an afternoon wedding than an evening. For example, etiquette wise, it is not appropriate to wear tuxes if it is not an evening event. A floor length gown would also be considered too dressy for an afternoon wedding. If you are concerned you could state 'black tie optional' on your invites. This will let your guests know that you would prefer that they dress up.

I do think it has an effect....women may wear suits or a day dress or pantssuit instead of a cocktail dress.

I'm having an afternoon wedding and fear the same thing. We are having 'formal attire' put on the invitations... hopefully that will work.
