I don't want to take FH's last name. I love my name and I have a family history that I am SO proud of and I want to remain associated with it by keeping my last name.
I feel so horrible and guilty over it. I just tried to picture what the name on my door would say at work, and what my voicemail would say, and how I'd sign court docs if I were to take his name or hyphenate...and I just DON'T WANT TO and I don't know what to do about it. I WANT TO WANT TO! But I don't

well it's a big decision, have you talked to him about it -how does he feel- don't feel bad you are not the only woman in the world who feels this way - if it means that much to you to keep it then you should
He does know about it, and he is somewhat sad about it, but he is being understanding. He is hoping I'll keep my maiden name in my professional life and use his last name in my personal life.
That does sound like a good compromise. I only decided to hyphenate my maiden and his last name really for work reasons. I also want to share the same last name as my husband and my children (when I have children).
I really have no reason to keep my last name since I really didn't know my father since he left my mother when I was 2-3 years old but I feel like it's still connecting to my extended family. I am a very independent person and I feel I won't lose my identity when I get married but gain more of an identity of who I am.
I hope that this compromise is something that you can possibly live with.

I'm in the same boat...I love my last name..I feel like it's part of my identity..and i really hate the idea of changing it, but I know I will because it's very important to FH that I do....so it really depends on your situation: what you're willing to do and how important it is to your FH that you change your name to his...

Have you considered using your maiden name for professional use but changing your last name for personal private use?

Yes, I have. Part of the reason I'm also unsure about that is because I don't know what the rules are in my profession. I'll be an attorney next year (lol, assuming I pass the bar this summer), and I don't know if my legal name is my married name if I can then practice under my maiden, no longer legal name. I tried to check it out on the court website, but the answer wasn't obvious. It's something I'll definitely need to look into.
ETA: If any lawyer-brides out there read this and no the answer, please share with me!
