Will you be a Stay at Home Mom?

Original post by JoanneAndJustin

I've been thinking about this, I really don't want to stop working when I have kids. I'll go back to work after maternity leave (maybe part-time for awhile, maybe full right away) I always thought I wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom, but right now... I don't think I'd want to.

i will def not be a stay at home mom. I will probably take and extended maternity leave just to be with the kids for the first year but after that back to work. I have spent the last 8 years studying for my career there is no way I am wasting that hard work

I dont want any kids...so no. But I would really like to retire and become a woman of leisure...just do charity work and lunch with friends. LOL. A girl can dream. But since I make more money...it wont be happening.

ITA .. i dont really want kids .. but if i have them i will continue to work

Um, if you don't want kids don't have them. That's what birth control is for.

Just saying, having a kid is a choice, not an accident. (most times.... )

Im not on birth control.. never been ... and Fh wants kids .. he wants 4 .. HUGE compromise ... I LOVE KIDS i just think that once you have them your whole life is changed ...

No, no I get that... I'm just saying if you don't want kids go on the pill when it's time or prevent it some other way. If you're undecided that's one thing.... but I hope you and FH can come to a compromise where you're both happy or there could be trouble.

Im sure ill have one .. I guess the thought of being a mom kinda scares me ... lol its a huge responsibility ..he just recently changed his mind... he went from 0 then 2 now 4 .. hopefully the numbers go back down lol ...

If I could afford it I would probably want to work only part time, in a away that either me or FH are home with the kids. I don't think I could stay home full time...I may go crazy!! But if it causes financial hardship then I would rather be able to provide for my children and have them be with a nanny than struggle.

Well heres my plan: I always wanted a clothing store (its my dream). So FH and I decided that before I'm 30 ( and where the economy is) we can open one. So While I stay home and raise my kids, I can make my small business plan and start setting everything up. I really want to be there when my kids are little. From what I hear, its a full time job.

I really really would love to and hope I can. FH really wants to be a stay at home dad. I just hope we are set financially to do that.

i would like to not stay home 100% but it would be nice if i only had to work part time. i would miss the social aspect of work, being cooped up in the house all the time isnt fun.
i dont think financially though we will be able to do it that way

I would like to be when my children are young and before they are in school. FH has a job whereby is away for a month, and then home for a month, so it would be tough to raise the little ones by myself when they are younger while he is away if I were to keep my current job. Luckily I think we'll be able to afford to do so too. After they get older though, I would like to go back to work at least part time... Maybe even do an online master's degree while the kids are young...? Not sure yet though...

Same thing here...I really want to give my kids what I didnt have when I was younger, but i dont think we could afford to not have me working. I am a child of after school babysitters and summer camp, and i wanted to be able to have my kids be home, but i dont think it will be possible...

I want her to be a stay at home mom. My mom was never around Monday thru Friday and always tried to make up for it. My parents still are never home. My brother and sister come home to me...and I make sure the homework is done and everything. I dont want that.

I get what some people are saying about school and everything else....those are different stories.

If money didnt matter...what would you do?

I am probably going to have to keep working...I dont even think that I would want to stay at home full time. I have really good hours as a teacher- so hopefully my mom can watch the baby during the day for us. But I would stop working summer school and all the after school work that I do.

There would be nothing better then when FH and I are blessed with children that I could stay home with them until they are in school. But I know that realistically at this time the way the economy is who knows if we would be able to have children and live off of one income.

If we decide to have children, I will not be a stay-at-home mom. I am not going for my PhD for nothing. But, if it is possible, FH would like to be a stay-at-home dad. I have no problem with that as long as we can afford to do it. Any other guys out there want to be stay at home dad? It is 2009 after all.

I want to work and have kids. My dream is to be able to take a few years off when I have kids to raise them until they go to school and then start working again. My hours would be the same as the kids since I am a teacher.

If FH gets into the union than i should be able to - he is against it though

I am at the point where i don't want kids if i can't stay home

i'll be working from home...so i guess that kinda puts me in the middle. although i'm sure when i start working from home, i'll still need someone to take care of the baby while i get business done.

I was raised with a mother who never worked and was always home for us. As much as that is my dream to be home for my children all the time the reality is we prob. won't be able to afford it unfortunatly

hmm..,

I do agree with the ladies that say that they paid alot for their degrees. I have a master's degree as well. I have a career too. But I would give ALL of that up to have my children be with me. My mom quit her job when I was born and my brother was 2. Best thing for us!! We struggled at times but to me and my family is was so well worth it. Now, my mom did go back to work when I went to school...which I would probably do too!!

Nobody takes care of your children like you do. JMO!!

This might sound completely ridiculous but I don't think I could ever not have a job. Although we have a joint checking account, I have my own savings account with my own money. I don't think I could ever handle not getting a paycheck. If anything I would rather work and have FH stay at home with the kiddies that way I can monitor the money. I'd feel helpless if all we had was his money and I would prob have a hard time doing anything with it...
