I know nothing about this movie, but I have seen the commercials for the interview with Daine Sawyer, why is it so controversial??
And also, why is it considered antisemetic? (I just heard Diane Sawyer ask Mel that question, if he is?)

Out of curiosity, I am definitely seeing this movie.

People who haven't yet seen the movie are crying that it is anti-semetic. Not sure why. But there's always controversy when the story of Christ comes to the big screen (think Last Temptation of Christ).

I would LOVE to go see this movie, but it looks way too graphic for me....not sure I can get past all the blood and such. In one shot you see Jesus getting pinned down to the cross and it's so freakin' realistic I got dizzy at the commerical LOL I'm a wimp!

The movie depicts the last twelve hours of the life of Christ. It's very violent and bloody and those who have seen a screening of it have stated that many who saw it were weeping.

The movie is even more controversial in the role the Gibson depicts of the involvement that the Jews of that time had in the death of Christ. Some firmly believe that the movie will fan the ugly flames of Anti-Semitism.

Some scenes needed to be deleted by Gibson because they were too tough.. in the brutality and the depiction of the Jewish people.

Gibson, an Orthodox Roman Catholic made the movie as a testament to his faith.

He says that he loves and prays for the Jewish people and he does not think they are responsible for the death of Christ.

I myself want to see it.. I am a Catholic as well, but not as strict as Gibson. I have a love for Christ that is unparrelled.

I would never think for a second that the Jewish people are responsible for Christ's death. I have Jewish people in my family who I adore. I love them and pray for them as they pray for me.

Same here.

I just don't see the big deal.

Everybody is saying about all this violence. To me the reality is that Jesus went through this violence, what other way are you going to show it?

it is a MOVIE... Mel Gibson's interpretation of what HE believes happened. I sincerely hope that there is no anti-semitism as a result of this movie -- it is simply a form of entertainment!! I'm sure it raises many questions that each person can answer for themselves according to their own beliefs.

Isn't is crazy how Janet Jackson's boob can cause just as much controversy as Christ?

People take things way too seriously...

I want to see it. Not because I'm very religious and not because I want to see what all the hype is about either. I think it looks like an interesting movie and I'm interested to see a person's take on the last 12 hours of Jesus' life.

I'm interesed to see if any of the new controversies are addressed in the movie -- Jesus being married to Mary Magdalene... if they had a child... etc. Fascinating!!!

I don't think they are. The movie's pretty much based on the Gospels and Gibson is a very conservative Catholic. I'm conservative too but not as much as Gibson.

Personally, I don't think Jesus would have had the time to get married... being God and all that... getting a reception hall.. centerpieces.. DJ... I just don't think He had the time..

But hopefully He can post on here anytime if He wants to! Anything He wants is always OK with me!

I doubt it. From what I understand, the movie focuses on (Gibson's interpretation of) the last 12 hours of Christ's life. Thus the violence factor - how else can you depict a person being nailed to a cross??!?

Yes, of course being nailed to a cross is going to be violent but that doesn't mean I necessary want to go to a movie and SEE that!

You're right Teri, you don't need to see anything you don't want to. I'm sorry, I'm confused - I wasn't talking to you or referencing your comment.

no need to apologize - a few posts had referenced the blood and gore factor so I wanted to clarify my point as well!

From what I heard they did have some head guy in the catholic church watch it. And he did not have a problem with it.

No, I probably will not. From what I understand, Mel pick and chose from the Gospels. Some stuff he completely made up.
Mel shows Pilate as a weak torn leader when most historical counts say Pilate was a cruel, hard leader and not adverse to killing people without a trial. Mel also depicts Caiaphas as a bloodthirsty leader who will not rest till Christ is executed. Let's face it, Caiaphus had some power, but Rome held the reins.

I've read two good articles about the movie, both authors have seen the movie and do a nice job explaining the history of the times and why the movie is so troubling on many levels. Newsweek's article is one and Christopher Hitchens article in this month's Vanity Fair is another.
