wisdom teeth advice- wedding related *UPDATE*****IM BACK!!!!!!!!!!

Original post by queenbean

I have been told by my dentist and oral surgeon that I should have my wisdom teeth out (3 of them- ugh) before they cause me any problems. I never had any kind of surgery before and the thought of having any kind of long term complications before the wedding is making me very nervous. On the flip side, if I don't get them taken out, I risk having a flare up infection around the time of the wedding.

What do you ladies suggest? The reason I bring it up now is it seems to be bothering me a little ever since last night. How long is the normal recovery time? Is a 3 day weekend sufficient for getting them out? I teach so it's hard to find time

***********UPDATE**********
I am actually getting them out today girls!! I am sooooooo nervous. Any words of wisdom (for my wisdom tooth surgery- how ironic!) would be appreciated! I am a nervous wreck.

********SECOND UPDATE************
I just wanted to thank everyone for all their support. I know this was something very common but I was sooooo nervous and it was comforting to hear about everyone's experiences. I had the surgery today and everything went well so far. I haven't been in too much pain and hope to be fully recovered in a few days.

Soooooooo glad it's done!

oh! and I am totally afraid to be knocked out so I may have to brave it out and be awake w/novacaine!
And to make matters worse I have never even had a cavity before so I have never had anything done to my teeth before... this is the first major thing done! oh god.

me too...before that i had never had novicaine. Its fine though....your anxiety makes it worse...but if i had known how it really was before, i wouldnt have even been nervous. Trust me, you'll be fine, and theres no reason to get knocked out if you dont want to.

THANK! I think I am going to go w/your advice! I cant stand the thought of being knocked out!

I didnt get knocked out. I dont think theres a need for it unless you dont like the sound of metal objects scraping against your teeth.

Yank 'em out ASAP! I had all 4 pulled at once, went back in a week to get the stiches out and didn't even feel as if I had 4 teeth removed the week before! I was nervous about being put under, but once that passed I was fine with it. I bled for a few hours after, nothing some gauze couldn't soak up. I was in minor pain for two-three days and then was able to eat again. Put it this way....I was in WAY more pain with them IN versus how it felt just minutes/hours after the surgery. I would no way no how risk being in pain FROM the teeth on my wedding day...go for it!

i got all 4 of them out, it was not that bad.

it tok about a week to fully recover, just do it and get it over with before you get problems

I would say to have them taken out. I waited and didn't do anything and I recently had one taken out but the other three are either too close to nerves and one is very close to my sinuses. So he said if the other ones aren't bothering me then to just leave them since I waited so long. If you leave them they might bother you later or still grow, I don't know how long they grow until.

That will definitely be me too! I cried just from FINDING OUT that I'd need to get it done! I have a friend who had lung surgery in HS, I don't know how she did it.

I had three out that came in wrong--instead of coming in vertically, they were embedded under my gums horizontally. It really wasn't too bad when they came out and they give you some strong pain meds so it doesn't bother you.

That said, make sure that you have a few days off (or the option to take a sick day). I had it done two days later, after consuming nothing but painkillers and soft food for 48 hours, I fainted. So just make sure that you actually eat something nutritious and soft (unlike me, who stuck with milkshakes and pudding) so you have energy!

That's exactly the way my teeth are. How old were u when u had yours out? I hear the younger you are, the easier it is.

Re: wisdom teeth advice- wedding related

I was probably 19 or 20. It was during Christmas break during college. It really wasn't too bad, especially since they give you pain medication. The first night, I didn't take them before going to bed and woke up at 1 am in serious pain. After that, I made sure to take them regularly and didn't have any big problems.

I'd say you should definitely get them out sooner. It sounds like the drs know what they're dealing with now. If you open it up to infection, it could be far worse.

Re: wisdom teeth advice- wedding related

Thanks, everyone is giving me the same advice I am the biggest baby ever. I don't even know where to begin, the anestethia part scares me as well as the surgery itself and then the after care. Ugh why can't I just have straight wisdom teeth?!?!

Re: wisdom teeth advice- wedding related

I didn't get knocked out, but I know people who had to be completely sedated because they were so freaked out. I'd recommend bringing an iPod. It's uncomfortable and painful, but it's all over within an hour. That's what was really reassuring for me...I just thought that it would be over really soon and I'd be at home afterwards. Just spoil yourself afterwards and let yourself recover.

So what did you use at the time of the surgery? I'm sure they must have had to use something.... novicaine?

I feel like I would need to get put out. I don't even like the sound of the spit sucker!

Nooooo you arent allowed to have extreme tempurates (not ice cream, not hot drinks, etc.). No drinking through straws

I've had all 4 taken out at once and didnt go under. I had an awesome dr. who was so gentile. My hands were swimming in sweat i was soo nervous. I had NO pain whatsoever. I didnt even need tyleonal later on. I actually went out later in the day.
Just remember to ice your cheeks alot.

Good luck, you will be ok!!!
