wisdom teeth advice- wedding related *UPDATE*****IM BACK!!!!!!!!!!
Original post by queenbean
I have been told by my dentist and oral surgeon that I should have my wisdom teeth out (3 of them- ugh) before they cause me any problems. I never had any kind of surgery before and the thought of having any kind of long term complications before the wedding is making me very nervous. On the flip side, if I don't get them taken out, I risk having a flare up infection around the time of the wedding.
What do you ladies suggest? The reason I bring it up now is it seems to be bothering me a little ever since last night. How long is the normal recovery time? Is a 3 day weekend sufficient for getting them out? I teach so it's hard to find time
***********UPDATE********** I am actually getting them out today girls!! I am sooooooo nervous. Any words of wisdom (for my wisdom tooth surgery- how ironic!) would be appreciated! I am a nervous wreck.
********SECOND UPDATE************ I just wanted to thank everyone for all their support. I know this was something very common but I was sooooo nervous and it was comforting to hear about everyone's experiences. I had the surgery today and everything went well so far. I haven't been in too much pain and hope to be fully recovered in a few days.
Soooooooo glad it's done!

just take them out.. any long term complications could just be swelling or something else that would just cause you discomfort for about a week or so. You are better off taking them out now and getting it over with.
i had my top pulled and it was fine - they say the top are easier because it can drain down. it wasnt a big deal and i had no swelling or excessive pain i was fine about 1 hour after. but also my WT were in already. I suggest getting put out.. i ws litterly out for 15 min at the most and it was so worth not having that 15 minutes of anxiety being aware of what tools they are using or IF you are going to feel anything
my sister had her bottom taken out and she had some swelling and they had to put a drain in (its not a big deal - sounds worse than it was) for a couple days and then she was fine.

I was told the same thing like last year, but I'm getting married soon, so right after the wedding I'm taking them out. I just couldn't afford to do it now. I want to be knocked out, not numbed so I have to pay a bit out of my pocket. They bother from time to time, but I make sure and brush back there, use mouth wash and always get a cleaning.

Ok, i was SOOOOO nervous to do it! I had to get my top two taken out. BUT the thing is, I DONT go under anestesia....i REFUSE to be put out by an oral surgeon. So basically, I had the top two taken out with just novicaine!!! The whole procedure took 7 minutes with stitches and everything....and because i didnt get knocked out i wasnt groggy or anything. I went home and ate eggs and bacon lol. The rest of the day i just put an ice pack on my face and it never swelled or anything! I had a good experience. I definitely recommend to not get put out, it might seem scary but its much better.
ETA: They were FULLY impacted. The worst they could be, AND on top of it, the oral surgeon said i have the smallest mouth and jaw hes ever seen LOL LOL. And with both of those problems, I still had a great experience.
oh good. that makes me feel better. I have also been going back and fouth about this, my dentist says I have small cavities on each of my top wisdom teeth and they do not want to fill them, they want to take them out! They have never caused any trouble so I have been putting it off for a while (and i am usually not a baby about these sort of things!) but I am afraid that if I wait until after the wedding that they might start to hurt by my wedding day. eh, I am scared! :(

oh! and I am totally afraid to be knocked out so I may have to brave it out and be awake w/novacaine! And to make matters worse I have never even had a cavity before so I have never had anything done to my teeth before... this is the first major thing done! oh god.

A three day weekend should be enough time to recover. I had them all taken out 2 at a time and I was fine within 2 days each time.

I had mine taken out in early October. I only had to take 2 out and although it did hurt, it only took about 5 days to recover. Everyone is different though so it might take you more days (but not much more) or less days. I say take them out. You have almost 4 months til the wedding so you have plenty of time.

Yeah one of my teeth gave him a really hard time and that side took a while to feel better. The other side was better im anout 3 days. And I didnt ice my cheek as often as everyone told me to so my face was swollen for a while.

I would just get them taken out. I had two taken out and it wasn't so bad. You don't want any problems right before the wedding

You cant be the world's biggest 'baby' 'cause I am. But I must tell you, I used t have a lot of discomfort with my wisdom teeth and, like you, my dentist recommended that I have them taken out. I did and I don't regret it at all. I won't lie, after the anesthesia wore off, I was in pain but it lasted only a few days. Ever since then, no more pain.

Wow that sounds crazy!! I'm glad it ended up being a positive experience not getting put to sleep. I'm SOOO scared to go under but I'm not so sure I would want to be awake either!!! I wish there was a way to just give the guy my mouth and take it back when the surgery is done

Thanks for the advice- you should know though that you are talking to the worlds biggest baby!! I knew about this issue since I got braces at 12yrs old. (not only am I a baby- but a procrastinator as well!)
I am convinced though. I think I FINALLY just might make the appointment.
OMG you sound just like me! I was told at 18 that I had to get them out for the same reasons they told you. I procrastinated forever but I finally got all 4 of them out just this past Wednesday. First of all, I was terrified of going under because I had never had anesthesia like that before...but let me tell you, that was the best part of the procedure, it was AWESOME! First they gave me laughing gas over my nose to relax me, and then they gave me an IV that knocked me out. It was just like blinking. One moment I was awake and talking to everyone, the next minute the procedure was over. I dont even remember falling asleep. Are your teeth impacted?? That makes a BIG difference in how long your recovery time will be. All 4 of mine were impacted which made it MUCH more invasive because they're basically doing surgery on your jaw to get them out. I'm on my 4th day now and I'm in more pain today then I've been in since the procedure. I'm not going to lie to you, this is probably the most painful thing I've ever gone through. But I'm so glad that I finally got up the courage to just get it done and get it out of the way. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions about my experience because I'm right in the middle of it right now!!!
Wow thanks for all your input, I hope you fully recover soon!! Mine are fully impacted tool. Well, the bottom 2 are, but the third one I need to get taken out isn't. It's actually growing in fine but if I don't get it taken out it will go into my gum when I bite down. Sounds lovely, doesn't it?
It's not good that you're in more pain now than since you had it done! Not to scare you or anything but find out if you have a dry socket. My FSIL had that over the summer when she had hers out and was in a lot of pain. I'm not too sure what it is, but its not uncommon for people to get that after this type of surgery I seriously hate going to the dentist for even a cleaning so I am going totally nuts over this.

Yeah, when I talked to my dentist this morning I asked him about the pain being from dry socket and he said it doesn't sound like that's what I have yet. And he told DH to look in my mouth with a flash light to see if anything looked out of wack back there, but everything seemed okay. I took a Vicodin not too long ago so I'm actually feeling pretty good right now. Like I said, I was exactly the same way as you...hated anything having to do with the dentist and I was soooooo nervous when I got there for the procedure that my whole body was literally shaking as I sat there in the chair. (until they gave me the laughing gas...lol) But I promise you, do the anesthesia, you will not regret it!! Why suffer through it and have to watch what they're doing to you, when you can just be sleeping instead? I was more scared of the anesthesia than the actual procedure because I hadn't experienced it before, but it was so simple and just lovely. Just make the appointment because they say the longer you wait and the older you get, the longer and more painful healing time can be. YOU CAN DO IT!

me too...before that i had never had novicaine. Its fine though....your anxiety makes it worse...but if i had known how it really was before, i wouldnt have even been nervous. Trust me, you'll be fine, and theres no reason to get knocked out if you dont want to.

I had mine taken out at age 25. I dreaded it for years and years from all the horror stories I heard. I finally couldn't take the headaches and jaw aches and just decided to do it. I only had 3 as well
I had a good overall experience. Minimal swelling and black and blue. I was back to work in 3 days. Just make sure you follow the post-op instructions!!! I know dry socket really can make recovery suck!! Looking back now I would have done it years sooner!

lol it's really not bad....just close your eyes and its over in 7 minutes....my FH thought they were lying when they told him i was in recovery. He's like no you must have the wrong person. But's thats all it was! Plus its like $500 to get knocked out!!!! What a waste of money in my mind for 7 mins. Plus i was fully awake the rest of the day and wound up going to the beach and walking on the board walk!

WOW! $500 to get knocked out? Mine was only $150 out of pocket. And they said my procedure was 45 minutes...I think it probably all depends on the individual cases. You're lucky you had such a great experience.

I got all 4 pulled at age 31!!!!
I got it done on Friday & was back to work on Monday. I slept all weekend & lost 8 pounds. Just do it before you f*ck up the rest of your teeth (like I did).
