wisdom teeth advice- wedding related *UPDATE*****IM BACK!!!!!!!!!!

I have been told by my dentist and oral surgeon that I should have my wisdom teeth out (3 of them- ugh) before they cause me any problems. I never had any kind of surgery before and the thought of having any kind of long term complications before the wedding is making me very nervous. On the flip side, if I don't get them taken out, I risk having a flare up infection around the time of the wedding.

What do you ladies suggest? The reason I bring it up now is it seems to be bothering me a little ever since last night. How long is the normal recovery time? Is a 3 day weekend sufficient for getting them out? I teach so it's hard to find time

***********UPDATE**********
I am actually getting them out today girls!! I am sooooooo nervous. Any words of wisdom (for my wisdom tooth surgery- how ironic!) would be appreciated! I am a nervous wreck.

********SECOND UPDATE************
I just wanted to thank everyone for all their support. I know this was something very common but I was sooooo nervous and it was comforting to hear about everyone's experiences. I had the surgery today and everything went well so far. I haven't been in too much pain and hope to be fully recovered in a few days.

Soooooooo glad it's done!

Have them take them out. It's not bad. You will be fully recovered by the time they take out the stitches. I would want it done before the wedding. If you get it done now you will be fine by your wedding.

How long is it typically though before they take the stitches out? I'm very limited for when I can do it because of teaching. Taking off 1 day for a 3 day weekend would be fine but is that enough time?!! I hate this.........

I was still up and walking around. I could still talk. Even if you can do it during February break you will be fine for your wedding. I am a teacher as well and did it during break. It did hurt but I just took vicodin and slept all day and night. The stitches I think came out maybe a week to 10 days later.

This is something you should totally ask your oral surg. I have had three wisdom teeth PULLED and the recovery was only a weekend because I didn't need meds or stitches, etc. I have ONE left and I am too chicken to have it removed :( My surgeon himself said it would take THREE weeks to fully recover :( But maybe others are 1-2 weeks.

Thanks for the advice- you should know though that you are talking to the worlds biggest baby!! I knew about this issue since I got braces at 12yrs old. (not only am I a baby- but a procrastinator as well!)

I am convinced though. I think I FINALLY just might make the appointment.

Oh - PS they say the stitches just fall out on their own with all oral surgery.

Oh, thanks. Hmm I guess I am pretty lucky if my first surgery will be at 23

They had to take my stitches out. I was a baby also. I made sure they gave me a local so it was like I was knocked out. If you are worried about the recovery and work I would schedule it during break and you will be fine for your wedding which would be at that point 3 months away.

Thanks, you're right. It was probably a mistake to see my MOH right after her wisdom tooth surgery. She was SOOO swollen that it definitely played a role in scaring me out of doing it.

Also I'm a bit afraid of getting local- never had ANYTHING like that before!

Haha. I was so like that. I was so afraid because I never had it before but it was the best. I was like do I want that or do I want to hear everything going on.

lol, good point- definitely would not be a fan of hearing a lovely rotation of drilling and cracking sounds. How is it done? IV? mask thingy?

I once got a cavity filled without novicaine- am I crazy or what?!?! I listened to the Cranberries on my portable cd player. Can you guess why I can't listen to the Cranberries anymore to this day??! !

Haha. I got the IV and I know they gave me novicaine after I was 'out.' I made sure I asked if they gave that. haha I don't blame you for listening to your cd. That is actually a good idea. My dentist has a tv in the room so I used to just watch that.

Sounds cooler than my dentist! Without supplying your own entertainment, for a cleaning you are forced to endure the sounds of the spit sucker. That's one of my most hated dental instruments lol.

Thanks for all your helpful input I'll keep the board updated and will probably be on here for a few days in a row once I go through with it and am in too much pain to leave the house!!!

Re: wisdom teeth advice- wedding related

Ok, i was SOOOOO nervous to do it! I had to get my top two taken out. BUT the thing is, I DONT go under anestesia....i REFUSE to be put out by an oral surgeon. So basically, I had the top two taken out with just novicaine!!! The whole procedure took 7 minutes with stitches and everything....and because i didnt get knocked out i wasnt groggy or anything. I went home and ate eggs and bacon lol. The rest of the day i just put an ice pack on my face and it never swelled or anything! I had a good experience. I definitely recommend to not get put out, it might seem scary but its much better.

ETA: They were FULLY impacted. The worst they could be, AND on top of it, the oral surgeon said i have the smallest mouth and jaw hes ever seen LOL LOL. And with both of those problems, I still had a great experience.

OMG you sound just like me! I was told at 18 that I had to get them out for the same reasons they told you. I procrastinated forever but I finally got all 4 of them out just this past Wednesday.
First of all, I was terrified of going under because I had never had anesthesia like that before...but let me tell you, that was the best part of the procedure, it was AWESOME! First they gave me laughing gas over my nose to relax me, and then they gave me an IV that knocked me out. It was just like blinking. One moment I was awake and talking to everyone, the next minute the procedure was over. I dont even remember falling asleep.
Are your teeth impacted?? That makes a BIG difference in how long your recovery time will be. All 4 of mine were impacted which made it MUCH more invasive because they're basically doing surgery on your jaw to get them out. I'm on my 4th day now and I'm in more pain today then I've been in since the procedure. I'm not going to lie to you, this is probably the most painful thing I've ever gone through. But I'm so glad that I finally got up the courage to just get it done and get it out of the way. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions about my experience because I'm right in the middle of it right now!!!
