wisdom teeth advice- wedding related *UPDATE*****IM BACK!!!!!!!!!!

Original post by queenbean

I have been told by my dentist and oral surgeon that I should have my wisdom teeth out (3 of them- ugh) before they cause me any problems. I never had any kind of surgery before and the thought of having any kind of long term complications before the wedding is making me very nervous. On the flip side, if I don't get them taken out, I risk having a flare up infection around the time of the wedding.

What do you ladies suggest? The reason I bring it up now is it seems to be bothering me a little ever since last night. How long is the normal recovery time? Is a 3 day weekend sufficient for getting them out? I teach so it's hard to find time

I am actually getting them out today girls!! I am sooooooo nervous. Any words of wisdom (for my wisdom tooth surgery- how ironic!) would be appreciated! I am a nervous wreck.

********SECOND UPDATE************
I just wanted to thank everyone for all their support. I know this was something very common but I was sooooo nervous and it was comforting to hear about everyone's experiences. I had the surgery today and everything went well so far. I haven't been in too much pain and hope to be fully recovered in a few days.

Soooooooo glad it's done!

Re: wisdom teeth advice- wedding related *UPDATE*****

i had 3 done at once a few months ago

it was horrible my face was really really swollen bad - and hard like a rock - i looked deformed.....i was out of work for a week.....i took LOTS of painkillers - tons of percocet - if i didnt have them i dont know what i would have done.....my advice is to ask for percocet if you can handle them - i took half at a time b/c im tiny and they are really strong.....but they def helped....

the 2nd day after was the worst.....i had both of my bottom done and one top, he had a hard time getting the bottms out and they cut a lot of my bone - so maybe that is why my recovery was bad - and my face and neck were a little back and blue also - which lasted for about 2 weeks (it was like yellowish for awhile after)......luckily eating was no problem i just couldnt eat solids for awhile.....after about 3 days i ate french fries and chicken nuggets from wendys

good luck!!

I just had mine pulled last month. It was only one, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Definitely glad to hear you are having them taken out. That's the last thing you need before your day, to have to worry about tooth pain!! Good luck!!!

You will be fine! I am the biggest baby when it comes to mouth pain and I had all four of my inpacted wisdom teeth taken out a few years ago. They knocked me out completely and I woke up which I thought was like 5 min later and everything was done. They stitched me up and I went home. I had it done on a Sat morning and I was out for the rest of the day. I was back in school on Monday and I could not participate in sports for a week. The following week I had the stitches taken out and then everything was done.

One word of wisdom for your wisdom teeth would be to be careful of what you eat and drink plenty of water. Also, swish with warm salt water. GL!!

Thanks everyone I know I probably sound ridiculous because there are so many worse things out there that people go through..... but this is my first surgery of any kind. I am so afraid because I have no idea what to expect even though I have heard 100s of stories. I feel like it will be different for me- worse than the average person! I take pain worse than a 2yr old.

Get them out!
I just had all 4 taken out at once in November. It took about 4 days for me to start eating almost normally again. Don't take the painkillers any longer than you really need to ( they made me sick and actually feel worse than the pain) switch over to advil. IF you get stiches it will feel really weird until the y take them out (mine were in for a week).

Good foods: Soup, mashed potates, anything soft. And avaiod eating rice for a while after, it tends to get stuck in the crateers which take a long time to fill in, mine are still there.

Good Luck and feel better!

(PS-I got knocked out for it, a weird feeling but better than knowing whats going on)
