I'm having a backyard engagement party. It's not a bbq it's going to be caterer and really classy. How do you word it so people don't show up in the right attire?

Re: Wording etiquette
I'm not really sure how to word it, but I think the invitation itself will show the theme. If you send out a more formal invitation (plainer cardstock, not little pictures of umbrella and drinks), it should show the formality of the event. I would also just say it's at your home and not mention 'backyard'

Re: Wording etiquette
i don't think i'd write anything about the attire.
maybe word of mouth would be the way to go if you're worried ... but honestly, i think most people come dressed nicely to engagement parties.

Re: Wording etiquette
the type of invitation that you send should reflect the style that you are going for.

backyard chic.
LOVE this!!! or like 'Backyard cocktail chic' so people don't think it means to wear their best jeans or something!

i used to work at a high end wedding invitation place, and they threw the word 'chic' on to everything! it works, though!

You could also put 'Garden Party'

Re: Wording etiquette
When my company sends out their holiday party invite (It is at an upscale hotel in nyc), they include the phrase 'Festive Attire.' It tells your guests - 'please don't be schlubbs' in a fun , upbeat way if that makes any sense. If any guests have questions on what that means, they can always call you.
One year these college kids got caught crashing - it didn't take a genius, they hadn't donned their 'festive attire' and stood out like sore thumbs.

My girlfriend had an engagement 'garden party.' Girls think, 'ok, wear a dress' and hopefully make their men follow!

lol, I hope not follow in their exact steps since dresses don't look great with hairy legs.
