Words

Original post by palebride

I was talking to my friend last night and she kept using the word 'Mortified' as she always does, but she was using it in the wrong context. She's been doing this for years, so it's pointless to say anything to her about it at this point.

But it got me thinking - what other words are there that people contantly use incorrectly on a regular basis?

Re: Words

According to dictionary.com:

irregardless

adv : regardless; a combination of irrespective and regardless sometimes used humorously

Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

my mom always adds an 'r' to words like...

TOIRLET

My Grandmother adds an 'r' to words too. I especially love 'warsh' instead of 'wash'. She also pronounces that days of the week in an odd way. She pronounces the 'day' part as 'dee'

'I did the warsh on Mondee.'

Why?

because it should be
'Can I help the next person?'
or
'Can I help whoever is next?'

My cousin always used to say 'sudden of all' instead of 'all of a sudden'

And over here people seem to use the verb 'commentate' and it drives me nuts a commentator doesn't commentate, he comments!!!

I hear 'conversate' all the time - drives me nuts!!!!!!!!

How about 'orientated'? Is it 'oriented'???? As in family oriented.

ooooh, yes...orientated....where the heck did that one come from

also:

Ironical
irregardless
supposibly
in flesh (instead of in the flesh)
and omg...I hate when people try to use a catch phrase & screw it up...

like 'Now we are cooking with fire.' OK, we always cooked with fire...it was the significant turning point for man to become of higher intelligence than other mammals.....the phrase is 'Now we are cooking with gas.'

'Beggers can't be choosy' ....um it's 'Beggars can't be choosers'

AND my all time favourite 'Nothing for nothing...'

Ironical? The misuse of the word 'irony' in general kills me. Thank you Alanis Morrisette - now that you have billions of dollars, buy a dictionary.

eta - Jagged Little Pill is still an awesome CD
