Re: Words

DH hates when nouns get turned into verbs. I can't think of one off the top of my head.

I also thought of Joey from friends saying 'it's a moo point..'

I think my most hated are stil 'aks' instead of 'ask' and 'libary' instead of 'library.' I hear these all the time from educated people

Ironical? The misuse of the word 'irony' in general kills. Thank you Alanis Morrisette - now that you have billions of dollars, buy a dictionary.

See - I have to disagree...i think Alanis was being ironic by writing about irony that wasn't actually ironic !!!

i dont' know if it was intentional, but it cracks me up when I think about it.

when I was little, my dad told me that 'liberry' was a bad word so I ALWAYS say Library properly!

tricky tricky!!!

Re: Words

The best one I've ever heard was when I worked in a high school. One of the teachers said the kids got right down to business 'without all the usual foreplay.'

I thought I would PIMP and had to leave the room so I would not fall apart laughing.....

like 'Now we are cooking with fire.' OK, we always cooked with fire...it was the significant turning point for man to become of higher intelligence than other mammals.....the phrase is 'Now we are cooking with gas.'

In HS, I had a huge debate going with another girl in my English class about ironcial. She even wrote something about it in my yearbook. It makes me cringe, but our teacher told us it was an acceptable synonym.

See:
Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition. 1995.

ironical

ADJECTIVE: Marked by or displaying contemptuous mockery of the motives or virtues of others: cynic, cynical, ironic, sardonic, wry. See ATTITUDE, RESPECT.

Yesterday, in the ladies' room, one of the Tri-Delts was explaining that someone had 'opened up a bag of worms.'

It's 'can' of worms! Bag of worms just sounds really gross!

Hmm, not that I'd prefer a can of worms, but a bag of worms just sounds too slimy and wriggly!

kid of like opening a bag of woop-azz doesnt' have the same threat to it

Isn't that what 'can of worms' refers to?
I have never seen worms in can though. I have seen bait vending machines though!

One of the girls in DH's circle of friends, says 'Valentime's Day' - drives me crazy that she uses M not N.

Also some people don't use seen/saw correctly
