No way!
I found a house I LOVED in Port Jeff Station and It was the same thing. Railroad right through the back yard.
#1. If you have kids if they wander off they can get hit by the train.
#2 Ive heard of strange people walking up and down the tracks..
#3 The noise

I grew up about 3-4 blocks from the LIRR. It was fine. In fact, it was great for commuting when I lived with my parents (we were near the actual station, not just the tracks). However, there were a lot of other houses between mine and the train. My friend's house had only a huge field between the house and the train and another friend lived right on the tracks. Their houses shook when the train went by. Mine didn't. I would be so scared about my dog getting through the fence or my kids playing on the tracks. Plus, resale could be difficult for a house right on the tracks.

not right through the backyard! It gets loud and the house will shake...make an appointment to be at the house when you know a train will come through most of the realtors will show you the house when it is all quiet and say that it isnt that loud..

There are a lot of things you need to think about
1. How much do you like the house? How does it compare to the other houses you have looked at?
2. How big is the backyard? How loud would it be?
3. Would the train need to just go behind your house, or are you near an intersection where the horn would be going off right before the house?
My BF from HS lived in a gorgeous house with train tracks right behind her property. She said that the family got used to it, BUT her parents always said that it hurt the value of the house.
