Would you go into debt to adopt a child?

Just curious?

THat's a tough one. If I were actually faced with that decision today, I would say no.
But that's considering my current financial situtation.
If you only have basic debt, like a mortgage car payment and couple hundred bucks in ccd's then I would considerd it.
But I think it really depends on your situtation.

As much as I want a child, I'm not sure if would go into debt. I would want to adopt a child and give him/her everything, being in debt would probably limit what I would be able to give them... hope that makes sense and doesn't make me seem heartless

I would.
Having a child, whether your own or adopted (both being AS special as the other) would come with expenses anyway. My husband mentioned the other night how he would adopt NO QUESTION if we were in a situation where we were considering it...

Of course it depends on how deep of a debt and how much youd have to sacrifice to pay it off. Would it change your entire lifestyle? Im sure in most cases, its a 'we can make do' situation if a couple is even considering it.

I would tell the person to follow their heart.

Johns previous coworker adopted 2 boys (maybe 2yrs between the adoptions) and Im sure they are in debt from the adoptions but Im even more sure that that $ figure hasnt crossed their mind once day to day seeing their precious faces and throwing a ball to them....

The topic of 'Children' in any way, shape or form is really a soft spot in my heart, tugs at my heartstrings.... so I can ramble on and on....

I would say yes. Like many things I suppose it is hard to answer without being faced with the decision, but my gut is yes. The rewards you receive from having children have no monetary value of them. So maybe you will have to forego that huge trip to Disney and instead build a castle in the living room to play in. As long as the debt is manageable and will not totally compromise your ability as a caregiver, I wouldn't give it a second thought. heck, I'm in some pretty sweet debt for that forensic anthropology master's degree I have......and I now work in marketing and don't even use the degree!!

I think I would, but of course, it depends on how much debt and each person is different. If it would put me in debt where basic needs would not be met (mortgage, clothing, etc.), then I probably would not. However, if it would cause me to live a little less comfortably (no 2nd car, etc.), then I would in a heartbeat.

Hm. I think I would if I didnt' have a child, or if I couldnt' have children. So yes. I would.

Since we have been discussing this I know the answer already is yes.

I would look into all aspects and see if it is feasible to do. The wait sometimes to get a baby is a few months, etc. (although I know some agencies want $$$ upfront to cover finder fees, etc.). Look at the big picture; is the loss of a potential new car or fantastic future vacation more important than a baby?

We're all gonna die with debt (unless you hit Powerlotto or something ), why not spend it while you're in the here and now and get what you really want out of it?

I sort of feel on the fence because I have four cousins that are adopted. Three put their adopted parents through hell during their teens, one was a pure angel sent from heaven. Two have straightened out and the other one is just a bad seed. Always in trouble with drugs, prostitution, prison. She 'left' her two year old daughter in my aunt's care when she ditched out of town to explore a drug/criminal scene in parts unknown at 21 (never to be heard from again, except when she needs to pay off her pimp, her dealer or bail money). The child she left behind is now 14 and is ALOT of trouble. So it makes you think of genetics - like the bad aspects of the child are from the parents. You can't say it's environment because the other adopted kid is absolutely wonderful.

If I were considering adoption due to inability to have children, then yes...

Yes, under the same circumstances...

100% YES
In fact Scott and I will most likely adopt baby #2 for many reasons.

As many of you know some very close friends adopted a girl from China last Fall. She is their daughter, no question about that. Giving birth does not make you a mother, caring for a child, giving kisses and hugs, staying up all night when your baby is feeling sick, playing kitchen, taking walks even though you are tired...that is being a mommy.

There are thousands of children that need a home..that need a mommy....and thousands of women who want to be a moomy so it is a perfect match! and adoption does not have to cost tons of money. It all depends on where you adopt from.

I know lots of teenagers that cause their parents trouble and they are not adopted so IMO that has nothing to do with it!

DH and I feel as stongly as Michele. God willing we will have our own children but we are talking about adoption also for the same reasons Michele expressed.

You don't have to grow the child inside of you to have motherly instincts

Even if the baby does not grow under your heart it grows in it!

Re: Would you go into debt to adopt a child?

YES

Let me try to put a background in here. The average cost of an adoption for an infant up to toddler age is $25,000.00. More often you hear $30,000.00. This figure has some wide margins on either side with a lot of 'depending on' situations. There is not much of a difference between domestic or international adoption.

Currently there is a Federal $10,000 tax credit and a pending $5,000 NYS tax credit that may be taken once an adoption is finalized. This helps, but it's very costly and not everyone can qualify for loans to cover the cost. Many adoptive parents dip into retirement savings or the equity in their home for financing.

Yes, and No. I hope that I would want the means to support that child. How can you raise a child if you have no $$.
i would get a second job, and do eveything to support him/her.
But not sure if I will ever adopt if Im not able to have kids.

Is there always a cost involved?? Can you never adopt a child that needs a home and there is no cost involved? With those that are in other countries and those whose mothers are giving their children up, I understand the cost there, but what about children just waiting to be adopted, does it always come with a big price tag???

I am 99.9% sure that I can adopt a child from Little Flower for no where near $25K...anyone else have real figures?

I think that if you want an older child...the cost is different but an infant is something most people want. The overseas adoptions range from $15k to $30k!! Those again are for infants
