I never thought about the expense...but I guess it makes sense...since often the mothers who are putting their child up for adoption don't have health insurance...is this a reason?
then all the salaries of the people that work to put it together and private....
wow...
Michele...I don't even know if I can or cannot have children...since we never tried...but afterall my study and travel in China...I am 95% sure that I want a little girl from China...

Re: Would you go into debt to adopt a child?
One of my cousins has 2 girls that she adopted from China. Another is awaiting the final ok to get her daughter from China (we're hoping before Christmas)
It is ALOT of paperwork, alot of money, a long length of waiting & there can be rejection.
That being said if I could not have anymore children absolutely we would adopt. (we have discussed this already)

Shamma A local adoption through our foster care system can cost very little. Basicly just the homestudy and post placement fees. Many its a few $1,000.00. It is very difficult to adopt through our foster care system (believe it or not). Children can be held in the system for years if a parent is 'trying' to get their act together. I havent heard many success stories going this route. I have heard about many heartbreaks.
There are many special needs children available for adoption through our foster care system. God Bless that family that can parent these children.
Domestic adoption of an infant may include complete medical cost depending on the birth mothers situation. Then you have a host of other fees some of them are Attorney, Homestudy, Agency or Facilitator, many adoptive parents advertise for birthmothers, travel expense.
As Tracy said

ETA - here is a link to one of the oldest and very respected adoption agencies in NY Spence Chapin just in case anyone wants a lttle more information.

Re: Would you go into debt to adopt a child?
My friends spent about that for their daughter but intersting enough much of money stays right here in the US. Here is a good point- they had to get fingerprinted for a background check and that cost a few hundred bucks. Well these fingerprints are only good for a certain period of time so they had to get them done again before leaving to pick up their daughter, and you guessed it...the US gov't charged them again!
Going to China for a child is a wonderful choice IMO. Those children will never have homes if not for foreign couples.

Re: Would you go into debt to adopt a child?
I use to have Foster Children and we are now going to take some more children in. My DH is taking the class because he never took it before. There are so many US children that need to be adopted including infants and if you take them into fostercare first then adopt it doesn't cost near that much. Also they give you a stiped for fostercare and I believe once you adopt them if it was a child in custody of the state you still get a stiped not as much though.
Should only be about a few more months and we will have our foster kids!

cooky- what age range do you care for? I cannot imagine giving the child back, especially if you fear for their safety or well being. You are a wonderful person to do this.

Yes, I would. I have gone into debt for things I would consider less important than having children. The thing about debt is that you can climb your way out of it. But I would be so unhappy if I never had the opportunity to raise a family.

If I have 2 more MC's then yes, Frankie and I would definitely be considering this whatever the cost!
My mother works for CPS I cannot tell you all the heartbreaking stories I have heard through the years.

Thanks Michele and Anna
I have been doing it since I have been single. I had a 15 year old who had a son and was 7 months preganant so there was three of them after a couple of months. I had them for a year and a half. Yes it is hard, but when you go for the classes you can either take in kids that are up for adoption (they changed the laws so kids come up for adoption much faster and don't have to stay in fostercare as long) or you can chose children that there ultimate goal is to go back to there family. They ( the social workers) would not let them go back unles they know it was safe. Strick rules they go by.

If I couldn't, I DEF would.. I could never imagine myself without child, even if I was not the one to give birth to the baby...

Re: Would you go into debt to adopt a child?
It is quite surprising how little adoption from overseas can cost when you consider how much repetitive fertility medications and treatments add up to. $19,000 [to adopt] vs. $10,000 for each IVF attempt....and Rx medications...etc.
Just a different perspective....

Even worse is that if they decided they want another child from China. they have to go through ALL the paperwork again! Doesn't matter that they have your info already. At least that's what happened to my cousin in Ireland. It took over a year to get another child.
But, it's all worth it in the end. My baby cousins are lovely!!!

Re: Would you go into debt to adopt a child?
See if you go into Fostercare then adopt they take your fingerprints for nothing. DH and I had it done two weeks ago.
