Wow, real estate value in VA

Wow, real estate value in VA

DH and I are so sick of the cost of housing here in Northern VA. Get this:

DH and I bought a townhouse just under 2 years ago. We live right by Dulles Airport, which is about 45 minutes from D.C. (if you don't hit traffic, that is, which is almost never).

It's a 1300 sq. ft. townhouse with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, no garage, and a teeny 'backyard'. We bought it for $234,000. Our neighbors, who live a couple of townhouses down, just put their townhouse on the market. They bought their townhouse like a month before we bought ours, and it's almost the same exact model so we're assuming they paid close to what we paid. Well, the day they put their townhouse on the market it sold. And it sold for $350,000!!!!!
I just can't believe that someone would pay that kind of money for a tiny 3 level townhouse! It's good news for us since now we know how much our property value has gone up, but it's only good news if we decide to sell and then move out of state. Houses here go for at least $500K. So depressing.....

I know! I live in Alexandria and there is a row house, all brick, and absolutely not cute, no driveway, no yard and its built in the 50s. 2 1/2 bedrooms 1 1/2 bath and its 417!!!

FH and I are never going to be able to buy a house.

My step-sister lives in Alexandria and I know the prices there are high like they are here on LI. I think you get a bit more for your $$ though.

Those prices don't sound too different from LI. 2BR 1 1/2 BTH townhouses in my development in Nassau Co. sell for over $400K. Good thing for DH and I b/c we bought over 2 years ago and have seen it really raise in value! That $ we made is a downpayment on a house we couldn't have afforded otherwise!
