I found this on another board and thought we all might get a kick out of it. It does kind of put New York weddings into perspective.
http://boards.elegantbride.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/99810831/m/33410141 Just in case you coulnd't get the link to work.... This was on a discussionof Buffet vs sit down dinner. Keep in mind it's a national board.
posted 17 March 2005 11:20 AM I don't see how sit-down for $26/plate is considered inexpensive at all! lol
If you set it up well, the buffet can go very nicely. Space the serving tables so that they can be accessed from both sides: Obviously, twice the people can get through the line in the same amount of time.
We're having an AMAZING buffet-style reception, for $7.99/person. This includes the cost of my wedding cake and groom's cake. We get 9 food items and a beverage. Any food item extra we want past that is an extra $1 per person. And we're having all kinds of things from fresh fruits and vegetables to hot meats and sides--all gourmet style. You can find a decent price out there if you're willing to do a little legwork. There's no way I'd ever pay someone $26/person to feed people, especially since I've got over 250 of them. Perhaps it's the Southerner in me, but that just seems ridiculous to me when you can do so much for so little.
Guestlist size has a lot to do with it, too. If you don't want to cut your guestlist, then go buffet style. It's more comfortable to your guests... you've been there, you know what I'm talking about. Honestly, I think it takes longer to get everyone in a sit down wedding served.
Your call... just my opinions.

Re: Wow.. take a look!
That is hysterical!!! I have cousins from SOuth Carolina... and I mean DEEP South Carolina. When they came to my sisters 'LIWedding' thay had their mouths open the whole day. Down there, they have the ceremony and then go to a back room in the church and have coffee and cake.

I wish I could pay $7.99 per head and only add $1 per person if I wanted to add another dish I wish this is the case

I think it's GREAT! If you're supposed to cover your plate, if you and your FH BOTH go to her wedding you only have to give $16.
Hell, I'd even give $17!
oh come on, wouldn't you at least round it up to $20?

I don't feel bad for writing this cause SHE is the one who openly bragged about paying 8 bucks for her guests dinner and that'd she'd never pay $26 for someones dinner...
THE MEAL BETTER COME WITH A TOY.
I'm sorry, it's not intended to offend anyone, but it certainly lightens up the tense mood of planning a wedding. People in NY go crazy with weddings, it's insane-but it's also what most of us grew up with, and dreampt of. To see the comparision between the two is hysterical-it's outrageous what catering halls charge here. If I wasn't laughing I would be crying my eyes out.

Well, I am from TN. and even in the south most catered weddings cost more then $7pp. I know that a lot of my family was shocked at how, in their words, 'lavish' or 'extravagant' my NYC wedding was, but by NY standards it was pretty normal. It is just a difference in regions.

Yeah my Fh is from TN. There is a big culture clash but his sisters wedding was more than 7 $ per plate! They may do wedding smaller down south but 7$ is ridiculous!
About the 20$ gift though.. Don't laugh.. welcome to my world. 1/2 of my guests are from down south.. what do you think I am getting for gifts. FH once gave a 40$ toaster to a GOOD friend for a wedding present!

Re: Wow.. take a look!
It is AMAZING that people are paying per person the same prices I was quoted for just some little extras.
So the girl from memphis is paying $7.99 per person for EVERYTHING. Now some perspective for NY brides:
I was quoted about $7-$8.00 for sorbet intermezzo. This girl is paying about that price for her whole wedding, including 2 cakes.
I have a friend who paid almost the same price for chair covers that this girl is paying for her wedding!!!
And not to mention favors. There are plenty of people here whose budget for favors is $7.00 per person.
Or invites. I am considering one that is $12 per invite.
