Wow.. take a look!
I found this on another board and thought we all might get a kick out of it. It does kind of put New York weddings into perspective.

I don't see how sit-down for $26/plate is considered inexpensive at all! lol
If you set it up well, the buffet can go very nicely. Space the serving tables so that they can be accessed from both sides: Obviously, twice the people can get through the line in the same amount of time.
We're having an AMAZING buffet-style reception, for $7.99/person. This includes the cost of my wedding cake and groom's cake. We get 9 food items and a beverage. Any food item extra we want past that is an extra $1 per person. And we're having all kinds of things from fresh fruits and vegetables to hot meats and sides--all gourmet style. You can find a decent price out there if you're willing to do a little legwork. There's no way I'd ever pay someone $26/person to feed people, especially since I've got over 250 of them. Perhaps it's the Southerner in me, but that just seems ridiculous to me when you can do so much for so little.
Guestlist size has a lot to do with it, too. If you don't want to cut your guestlist, then go buffet style. It's more comfortable to your guests... you've been there, you know what I'm talking about. Honestly, I think it takes longer to get everyone in a sit down wedding served.
Your call... just my opinions.
