Wow.. take a look!

Original post by wads76

I found this on another board and thought we all might get a kick out of it. It does kind of put New York weddings into perspective.

Just in case you coulnd't get the link to work.... This was on a discussionof Buffet vs sit down dinner. Keep in mind it's a national board.

I don't see how sit-down for $26/plate is considered inexpensive at all! lol

If you set it up well, the buffet can go very nicely. Space the serving tables so that they can be accessed from both sides: Obviously, twice the people can get through the line in the same amount of time.

We're having an AMAZING buffet-style reception, for $7.99/person. This includes the cost of my wedding cake and groom's cake. We get 9 food items and a beverage. Any food item extra we want past that is an extra $1 per person. And we're having all kinds of things from fresh fruits and vegetables to hot meats and sides--all gourmet style. You can find a decent price out there if you're willing to do a little legwork. There's no way I'd ever pay someone $26/person to feed people, especially since I've got over 250 of them. Perhaps it's the Southerner in me, but that just seems ridiculous to me when you can do so much for so little.

Guestlist size has a lot to do with it, too. If you don't want to cut your guestlist, then go buffet style. It's more comfortable to your guests... you've been there, you know what I'm talking about. Honestly, I think it takes longer to get everyone in a sit down wedding served.

Your call... just my opinions.

That's too funny!!! But you have to take into account the quality of the food and service for $8pp. You might as well have a pot luck dinner reception at that rate!

Wow, that explains a lot. My souther guests were in my book stingy but if this is how stuff goes down there it makes sense.

Maybe Mephis should be the new spot for destination weddings for couples on a budget!

That sounds like a good idea!

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, and maybe I'm misinterpreting peoples' responses, but I find many of the replies to this post to be shameful.

Of course, I agree that $26 per/person is not expensive for a wedding. The reality of the situation is that most of this country can't afford and/or is not accustomed to paying the sums of money for weddings that people do in the tri-state area, though. It doesn't make it wrong. To laugh at that fact is disgraceful. Supposed Trump or Ronald Perelman laughed at you for spending only $$$ per plate and put down your wedding for being cheap and low-class. I think you would be offended. Everything is relative.

I'm in total and complete shock! While the cost of weddings down south may be less expensive than it is here, at the end of the day you still get what you pay for regardless of where you are...

Easy there... I think you are misinterpreting people's responses. I think most people are laughing because we only WISH prices like that existed here in NY. Nobody said it was wrong, cheap or low class.

I think most of us have learned during this wedding planning experience that no one does weddings like NY and NY is not the norm for weddings. Our weddings are way more expensive and lavish. And I'm not saying that to put down other state's wedding styles, it's just a fact. I'm sure when THEY hear about what we pay here, they think we are just plain dumb for spending that much money.

JimmysBride - I agree - maybe I'm misinterpreting some people's responses - and you certainly aren't disparaging these less expensive weddings - but some of these responses compared these weddings to 'McDonalds,' called southerns 'stingy,' and use the ROTFLMAO icon - it's very borderline to offensive.

I definitely did not mean to be offensive. I was also pointing out the ridiculous price difference, not making a judgment on the other wedding. That's why I made the point that my friend's wedding down South was gorgeous... Doesn't matter what it costs if you have a great experience. I just WISH it was less expensive here...

I don't feel bad for writing this cause SHE is the one who openly bragged about paying 8 bucks for her guests dinner and that'd she'd never pay $26 for someones dinner...

THE MEAL BETTER COME WITH A TOY.

I think it's GREAT! If you're supposed to cover your plate, if you and your FH BOTH go to her wedding you only have to give $16.

Hell, I'd even give $17!

I am jealous!
Can you imagine the wedding you can get down there for what we are paying here?
All the guests would get their own limo...

Re: Wow.. take a look!

I think its healthy for us to realize that weddings are not necessarily such an investment in other parts of the country.

I'm going through just this sort of 'culture clash' with my FH -- who is from Montana. His sister's wedding reception only cost $1,000. It was pot-luck! When his brother got married he was the BM and was asked to wear 'a nice pair of black jeans'.

Whenever I bring up how much something is going to cost he looks dazed. And because weddings here are so much fancier than the one's his family is used to we intensionally scaled things back a bit. Sometimes I wish we were getting married in Montana so that we could save $$!!
