Re: FMIL

I guess you have to put on a hapy face and when she asks questions give evasive answers. When FH's family starts on us over something they don't like or how our kids have to be 100% Jewish I just say 'We have a lot of time, we haven't nailed down those dtails yet. We'll take that into consideration, Thank you'..

Also, nailing down the 'I am listening intently' look while you're not at all listening helps too!

Re: FMIL

Sorry that you are upset!
I would just yes her when she tells you to do something containing the wedding. I think that would be a good way of dealing with her.

Re: FMIL

I have learned to half listen.. I nod my head at the right time and I tell her that's a good idea but I have to ask FH what he thinks.. because she never asks in front of him of course..

Re: FMIL

just don't answer - she is only trying to upset you and if you keep getting upset, she is winning

Re: FMIL

I can totally sympathize...my FH is an only child & his mother truly wants to be a big part of the wedding. She takes offense to anything we already planned and then she'll complain to her sister that we don't want her opinion & we're doing everything w/o her. The things I did show her (possible girl's dresses & the dress I liked) she just looked at the picture, didn't say 1 nice thing & then said, well you have a lot of time to decide.

Like the others, I learned to 'listen intently' and saying yes, but will then do whatever WE decide to do anyway.

Hang in there!!!!!!!!!

Re: FMIL

I hate when my FMIL says 'well you have a lot of time to decide' she does that too, and that makes me nuts!!!!!

We don't have that much time, and I like to get things done and plan ahead. Especially since we're paying for the wedding ourselves with some help from MY FATHER. not FMIL.

that felt good.

I don't think there is much you can do about it, except kill her with kindness.

Thanks

glad I'm not the only one....my mother had it pretty hard with her MIL, and told me I'll never win, just put on a nice face and smile............this really stinks. hope I'm not like this if I have a son

You won't be, especially because of your experiences as a daughter in law. My FMIL is great to me, and she makes it a point to be great because of all the trouble she had with her MIL. She couldn't even get married in a church and have a reception because her ILs refused to attend and she didn't want to have a traditional wedding without both sets of parents. Her husband also didn't feel right about a reception without his parents there. So they got married at city hall, and to this day she regrets not having a wedding. Sorry to be long, but the point is that you don't have to worry about making the same mistake because you know how it feels. You'll be great to your FDIL.
