It's not impossible to live here. It's just you must let go of VA expectations. Re-wire yourself and view things as if you were moving into a city... LI prices are much more in line with parts of DC and chicago than the suburban south. (It's also somewhat similar to CA suburbs...)

It's true, there is absolutely no way you'll be able to have the size home you had in VA.... you will definitely have to part with some of your furniture. but, if you find a place close to a park and a grocery store, you don't need a huge yard and refrigerator/pantry....

Also, like others mentioned, you are quoting the higher end of the LI apartment market... it may be the town you're looking in. If it's north shore / nassau county you'll be paying more than south shore or suffolk. Although, I will confess that a 2 bedroom in port jeff will cost about 1800 if it's in one of the better apartment complexes, and we're pretty far out east....

Everything in NY is so much $. Can't understand how people do it.

we are saving saving saving...the bigger the down payment the easier it will be a month. But I decided to go back to college to become a nurse quickly so that I can live here making a great income. FHmakes awesome money. But even if your making 100k a year its still hard. We are probably going to purchase a house that has an apartment built in it, so that can pay for some of the utilites and taxes. Its just insane.

My bro lives in Binghamton and his mortgage is $350/month...totally pisses me off!!!!!!

Yes, but he lives in Binghamton. There's a reason his rent is so low.

Yeah and he has an amazing house, great job and lives in a beautiful area. Not a bad life at all.

FH and I are living in a basement apartment in my parents house...Rent is cheap and meals are included. This is what we have to do since neither of us want to leave Long Island. We figure within the next 2 years after the wedding we should be able to afford a good down payment on a nice home here on LI. It is the sacrifice we both have to make in order to live where we want. This is what you do on Long Island in order to live here!

Yo don't dis my alma mater!! Bing is an awesome place! I'm a city girl and I loved it there to boot

There are people out there who find LI to be overpriced 'for a reason,' and I'm afraid those reasons might be worse than anything that could be said about Binghamton.

I don't think she was saying Binghamton is awesome -- just pointing out that it's a different area with a very different real estate market.

NYC and its suburbs are more expensive - that doesn't make them better or worse. It is what it is.

I grew up upstate and there is a lot to be said for that lifestyle. My FH is a LI boy and he was amazed at my dad's wake. We had over 1000 people come to pay their respects. There's a whole other level of community up there. And a lot can be said for a more relaxed, less traffic lifestyle!

To each his own!

We were lucky enough to be able to buy our house. We would be paying the same amount of rent as we pay for our mortgage! It's hard just starting out. if we didn't have the money for the down payment and closing costs , we wouldn't be able to afford it!

Re: NWR: cost of living in Long Island

I have been looking at apartments and so far for a backyard two bedroom in eastern suffolk county (southshore) its about $1,200-$1,500 (depending on what is included). Fh and I are moving in together real soon but to live on the island is a nightmare.

We have the highest rate of forecloures in a state and that is because people are buying a house they can't afford once you factor in taxes, etc. Fh and I have accpeted the fact that we can't afford a house for a VERY LONG time unless we rent part of it out to suppliment an income or one of us gets two jobs.

A house for rent depending on what you want exactly would be anywhere $1,500 to $2,000 from what I have seen.

Also if you can wait it out till mid to late fall or winter NO ONE wants to move in usually during these times and the rent prices go down.

while LI may have a higher foreclosure rate than the rest of NY (and in the articles I have read, Buffalo isnt far behind, and housing is far less)

Nassau - Suffolk is about 50th in forclousres. there are MANY places that have worse foreclosure rates than LI.

people buy too much house everywehre, not just LI. Look at CA!

we couldn't do it. moving into the apartment of FMIL's house. hope she does not drive us up the wall. we are paying upstate prices for 1 bed room apartment .

the advise already posted is good- south and suffolk..also in the city its cheaper taxes but higher rent but if you work there than no train $$ ..
and there are dog parks so u do not need a yard but time to walk your dog.. my uncle used to morning and again at night and the dog was fine all day. !!

Like many others have said, welcome to Long Island

We are fortunate enough to be renting the apartment in my grandparents house and are getting a really good deal on the rent.

Good Luck!

This is why FH and I are probably starting out in Pittsburgh PA for a little while so we can afford to live in a nice house... then maybe when we save up we can come back here! It's rediculous how expensive it is...

Re: NWR: cost of living in Long Island

You should look for houses to rent - i know people that rent out a house and it is 2k/month plus utilities and they have full use of the yard. you should look out for that instead of the apartments because there are not many apt's on LI.

I honestly didnt think it was that expensive to live on long island, I mean there are certain areas that are way more than others but there are really affordable areas here. Just search around, try craigslist!!!

Tell me about it! FH & I are young college students with a baby. We need to find a two bedroom apartment in a certain price range. I'm very nervous because it isn't going to be easy. I'm really worried that we'll never be able to buy a house here.

The benefit is that New Yorkers also make more.
