Welcome to LI
We are currently living out east in a 2 bedroom 2.5 bath townhouse with 1 attached garage for $1800/month without utilities.

That is why we are moving to CT!!

CT is not much behind LI- depending on the area- where are you moving? I have lived here for a few years now!

Yes, it is high. But it is not just LI it is anywhere surrounding the NYC areas (Jersey, Westchester, Ct.). It is the price you pay for being close to the city. The further you are from the City the lower the prices go.

My bro lives in Binghamton and his mortgage is $350/month...totally pisses me off!!!!!!

Yes, but he lives in Binghamton. There's a reason his rent is so low.

Yeah and he has an amazing house, great job and lives in a beautiful area. Not a bad life at all.

That sounds cheap even for Binghamton, DH is from there and his brother bought a house 2 years ago and his mortgage is $800/month. Granted if you compare it to what our mortgage is, thats really cheap, but not $350/month.
I asked DH if he would want to live there and he flat out said no. Salaries are definitely less there, but so is the cost of living.

It's insane isn't it?! I live in a complex and we got a discount so it's a 1 bedroom for $1275 plus utilities. We split that so it's not awful. My answer to the cost of living is: MOVING! I'm not from here and we're getting the hell outta here post-wedding! My bro lives in Binghamton and his mortgage is $350/month...totally pisses me off!!!!!!

I always wanted to live on LI, but as I get older I realize it is overpriced!! FH just got a job in the Albany area and 2 bedroom apartment are all under 1000.

Just as a side note Binghamton is so cheap because it is probably one of the most depressing places ever to live.

Yo don't dis my alma mater!! Bing is an awesome place! I'm a city girl and I loved it there to boot

There are people out there who find LI to be overpriced 'for a reason,' and I'm afraid those reasons might be worse than anything that could be said about Binghamton.

Haha Lisa - I just dissed Binghamton and I went there.

Okay, please help me understand something. I was looking at the average cost of apartments in Long Island. It looks like it's about $2000 for a1-2 bedroom apartment. This is nuts! (I pay $1600 for a 2200 sq ft 4bedroom house in VA. ) If I were to have a job making $50k that is only about $2200 a month after taxes..... that leaves only $200 for EVERYTHING else.

So my question is.... how on earth do you afford to live on Long Island???

Where in VA do you live?? FH and I rent a 2br/2ba apt in Alexandria for a little less than what you are paying for a house!

I agree with the others; you can find more affordable places the further east you go. Try Northport, Kings Park, and points east along the Pt. Jeff line of the LIRR, especially out around Stony Brook. My hunch is that you can find some good deals there b/c of all the students at SUNY...the market won't bear those kinds of costs. Though those around USB can correct me on that...when I was a student there, housing off campus was cheap!

Problem is that I have a fully furnished 4 bedroom house now, so all that furniture is coming with me. I actually want to find a 3-bedroom house. I also have a dog, so I need a place with a yard.

This seems like an impossible task. I am just so amazed that there is such a huge diverge in salary vs. housing expenses. Kudos to all of you who are making it work.

I have a job interview this weekend, and if I get the offer, I will have little to no time to sell my place here and find a place up there. What should I do?

I would look into to buying then, right now it is a buyers market. I know it may seem overwhelming, but you can do it, maybe just rent something small and look for a house temporarily. GL

very good question..

my answer is that you leave LI as quickly as possible.

Fh & I have been suffering for years just barely making our rent.

Once we are married, we are moving to South Carolina.

We will be in OUR own house, no more paying rent.

The funny thing is that our rent for our apartment (basement-barely one bedroom)in NY will be less for a three bedroom house that we will own.

- Christina you're allowed to say that because you went there! :)

You live on LI because you want to live on LI. Where else do you have wineries, NYC, Beaches and little towns everywhere and we have the BEST schools! I feel like we have the best of everything here. You never have to go far to do anything. And the rest of the NYC/tristate area is expensive.along with other areas around all metro areas. I could never go down south as 'charming' and affordable as it is because its not LI. If you work hard and make smart decision and not live over your head you will be fine.

If you are not going to work in the city I recommend living in Suffolk county. To commute 45 minutes is not a big deal...for alot of us our commute is 2 hrs.

Stick it out. I get nervous about buying a house in the next year but it is now a buyers market and we won't have to spend half a million for a 2 bdrm house like people had to do 5 years ago...hence the tons of forclosures.

I don't know... people get so pesssimistic about LI but if your family and friends are here why move to be 'rich' but lonley.
