good question, and my answer is you don't! I'm still living with my mom and FH and I may have to stay in the apartment in her house for a few months til we can get on our feet.

Re: NWR: cost of living in Long Island
welcome to life on L.I. where everything is overpriced! $2000 for an apt. actually sounds a little high though. I know of apt. complexes that rent 1 bedroom apts. for about $1400. And if you look in the paper for apts. in private homes you could probably find one for less than that, maybe closer to $1000. Good luck!

Welcome to Long Island living!
Both FH and I still live at home because neither of us wanted to pay an arm and a leg for anything when we can save some money staying home. But to get around the whole issue, we got lucky in that FH's dad owns three apartments--one of which we are moving into.
You can find rentals that are below $2,000--but overall, LI is NOT cheap at all!

I agree, I don't think I've seen many apartments for $2,000 so thats a little high. Out east is much less expensive. The first year in our apartment we were paying less than $1500 for a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom in an semi-gated apartment complex with pool, tennis courts and gym. We even have a washer/dryer in our unit! The inital year was a 'special so the prices went up for our second year but not anywhere close to 2k.
We found our place on apartments.com they have prices on there but sometimes when you go in they give a lower price.

Re: NWR: cost of living in Long Island
It's insane isn't it?! I live in a complex and we got a discount so it's a 1 bedroom for $1275 plus utilities. We split that so it's not awful. My answer to the cost of living is: MOVING! I'm not from here and we're getting the hell outta here post-wedding! My bro lives in Binghamton and his mortgage is $350/month...totally pisses me off!!!!!!

LI is so expensive- especially comming from Virginia. but Im living in LB now and I am not paying anything near what you said. You can FM me for details is you want. But you will never get here for the money what you can get in VA. But you will get paid more here than down south, so its all relative- sort of.

It is tough but DH and I are very fortunate that we have great jobs and are able to afford a beautiful house!

$2,000 for a 1-2 BR apartment is high.
I had a huge (1,000+ sq. ft.) junior 4 on the water with a water view and huge terrace in Long Beach for less than that...

Re: NWR: cost of living in Long Island
We live check to check, which is normal for people on LI. It stinks. I also had to move out to Eastern Suffolk where the taxes arent ridiculous. My parents pay 8k a yr on their taxes in Suffolk, but closer to Nassau. We pay 3k in Patchogue.
If my family didnt live here I would move out of state. FH can get a job in Texas with our company but I can't imagine raising children one day without their grandparents/aunts/uncles/cousins around

Its difficult... but you can make it work. $2000 for an apt seems very high though.. unless you are talking about manhattan.

We used to live on Shore Road on the east end (near Roosevelt). We moved to Lynbrook last fall, though, for a shorter commute and to save some money for the wedding.
Where are you guys? Many of my friends live there and we're down there all the time!

Re: NWR: cost of living in Long Island
we can't afford to lol. which is why we live with my dad, and will continue to do so for a very long time. unless we go down to my mom and her whole side of my family in louisiana. it's so crazy. my moms house is bigger than where we live now, with a huge backyard and it only cost like $196,000 to buy. and the house we live in now is half a million. *sighs*

Problem is that I have a fully furnished 4 bedroom house now, so all that furniture is coming with me. I actually want to find a 3-bedroom house. I also have a dog, so I need a place with a yard.
This seems like an impossible task. I am just so amazed that there is such a huge diverge in salary vs. housing expenses. Kudos to all of you who are making it work.
I have a job interview this weekend, and if I get the offer, I will have little to no time to sell my place here and find a place up there. What should I do?
Live in Suffolk County. It is farther from the city, so a longer commute, but a little cheaper. (usually the further east, the cheaper) You can rent a 3 or 4 bedroom house in the town of Islip for between $1400 and $2200. Some places in the town of Brookhaven are cheaper than that. You really need 2 incomes to make ends meet, though... and even then its a close call sometimes... shop around would be the best bet...

Yes, but he lives in Binghamton. There's a reason his rent is so low.
