XP: Am I being unreasonable? A little upset with my reception hall and could use some advice
Original post by MalteseMommy
Hi Ladies!
Hoping you can help me out here with a question I have. I am under my minimum by 20 people at my reception hall. I fully understand that I signed a contract and am liable for the full amount of people. I am not asking the hall to eat the money I signed on for. However, being 20 people under I really feel the owner is not working at all with me here. We are talking about a significant amount of money being spent for nothing. I asked for upgrades..not the full amount of money I am spending on 20 people but something that wouldn't make me feel like I am throwing a lot of money away. I was offered less than a $300 upgrade. I then said that if they couldn't work with me a bit more I would just wrap up the 20 dinners I am paying for and will take them home with me. The owner said I am not allowed to do that because ' it is against New York State health codes to send home the extra dinners with you.' My question is...does that sound right? I am paying for 20 extra people...including their dinners...and I can not take them home with me? Am I being unreasonable here? Again, I understand I committed to a number but to then tell me I can not take home the meals I am paying for and only offering $300 in upgrades? So it really is just throwing money away. The owner then said that i was given stuff when I signed...but every hall I looked at was willing to 'give me stuff' if I signed a contract with them.
I have seen many brides on here say they were able to wrap the number of dinners that were under their minimum to take home with them.
I won't say where I am getting married...in hopes that we can find some kind of solution...but I am pretty upset with this situation.
I will say though I may have the best banquet manager in creation. She is really trying to help me out here and I am super lucky I have her. But I am not feeling this owner right now...he is a bit unreal to me!
Do you ladies think I am being unreasonable?

What health code is it violating? I would really like to know. It sounds the same as going to a diner or restaurant and being told you cant bring home your left overs!!??
I know this is an old post but I wanted to let you know why you cannot take food home.
It is against the law and yes, allot of places do let you take it but they shouldn't.
The reason being is that if they were to give you the food to take home, where are you going to refrigerate it, you can't so it sits there till you leave. Depending on what it is and how long it sits it can turn bad and cause you to become sick. Since it was the reception halls food you can turn around and sue them for contaminated food, although it was your fault that you did not properly store it.
They are doing it to safeguard themselves from lawsuits.
Although I do beleive that they should give you more than just $300 upgrade for 20 meals, that is definitly being greedy on the owners part. They should give you a $ amount of at least 50% of what the meals cost.

It is def not against health code...if that were the case, you wouldnt be able to take leftovers home from a restaurant either. Basically RH owners can get away with whatever they want to, there will always be someone right behind you who will pay them $$. Very unfortunate but true.

restaurants are just that, a restaurant. They expect you to leave within a certain amount of time. I'm sure they are under a different classification as a food service facility. Banquet halls provide you with food but they are also providing you with a facility for a party which you will be at for many hours after the food is served. When is the last time that you sat in a restaurant 6 hours after your meal was served and still took home your food. They are not doing it to be 'mean' or 'greedy' they are doing it to protect themselves.

This is so strange... my sister got married at The Riviera in March and we wound up taking home at least 10 dinners! hmm....

Hi Ladies!
Just saw that this post came up and noticed I didn't ever update it. My apologies!
The Riviera ended up knocking 5 people off of my minimum. So I was 15 people under. I still was not allowed to bring food home but they did offer my guests seconds if they wanted. All in all the Riviera was a really great place. Other than the little bump in the road with the minimum all went well. Also, my BM, Meghan, was FANTASTIC. She really went above and beyond for us.

I didn't mean to imply anyone was being 'mean or greedy' about taking dinners home. That was not what I wanted anyway. I was hoping at the time they would be able to work with me as far as upgrading a few things for the loss I was going to take on being 20 people under. Again, I was fully prepared to pay for the people I was under as I am the one who signed the contract. When i mentioned being 'greedy' I meant it towards not willing to give me a bit more than $280 in upgrades for 20 less people being there. Just wanted to clear that up.

oh no, that's not what I meant from your post. But I know others were thinking that the RH was cheeping out on you. I still think they should have given you at least half of what it was worth in upgrades. That's nice that they offered your guests seconds if they wanted them. I'm glad it all worked out in the end and you had a beautiful day.

Hi, I don't know personally but my friend was under the minimum. Their rh did not want them to take the meals home either, but she made her own arrangements for a soup kitchen to come and pick them. The hall said they would do it but she wanted to make sure it really went there- lobsters and all
I don't see why it is a health violation since if you go to a resaurant you could take it home with you- why would this be any different????

Thank you! I didn't think that was what you meant but I just wanted to make sure I didn't come across that way in my original post!
Thanks for you nice words! Have a great wedding!
