Hey everyone! I have to say I'm so in love with this site already! I just got engaged on the 7th, and my situation is pretty unique because of financial reasons FI and I are planning quite a long engagement, a 2013 wedding to be exact (LONG, I know haha) meanwhile we will save up together for our dream wedding, even though we need forever and a day lol Anyway this is where it gets a little tricky for me:
FH's parents want to send out engagement announcements to friends and family, just to make it a bit more formal but do people usually send engagement announcements. We also will send out some thank you cards for a couple of people who sent us congratulation cards, which we thought were really nice
I'm not sure, but what I see most people do is send out the STD's only right? But for my situation I definetely think it's silly to send out STD's for a wedding that is basically 4 years ahead.
So what do you girls think I should do?
Should I send out engagement announcements now, then wait to send the STD's when it's closer to the wedding? or should I just skip the Engament announcements and wait until it's time to send the STD's?
We are also thinking of having an Engament party sometime in the near future (could range from a couple of months to about august of next year, we don't know yet) Would it be too much to send out Engagement announcements, and then maybe soon after send Engagement party invites? Because we didn't decide on a date for the e-party yet.
Sorry for the really long and annoying avalanche of questions haha but this is driving me nuts Because FI and I were actually gonna go get engagement announcements done today but I just wanted different opinions beforehand
Anyway Thanks you all soo much in advance

First off...Congrats and Welcome! I would just wait and send out invites for your engagement party instead of an announcement and then invites. I also think that sending thank you cards is very nice. JMO Good luck

Congratulations! As far as the STD/Announcement question I agree that its way too early to 'save-the-date.' I think its sweet that your FILs want to send out announcements. Personally I would just send out invitations to the engagement party when it happens but if they want to send them to their close friends and family theres no harm.

Congrats! You got engaged on my birthday
Personally, since you're having such a long engagement, I don't see a problem with sending announcements, then e-party invites later, then even later again STD's. You'll probably want to send announcements to more people than are going to be invited to the e-party, unless your e-party is going to be as big as your wedding.
I say go for it...you've got 3 years, so to get something in the mail once a year, I don't think it's too overwhelming.

CONGRATS!!!! and welcome!!!!!!
STD's and enagement announcements are totally seperate diff things, if your parents and fil's want to do the announcements go right ahead! it'd be cute! and a great keepsake
STD's you dont want to send out more than 1 year away, most people send them 7-10 months before the wedding date.
You could do your eparty whenever! theres no set rule, some girls have them right away and some wait till there about 1 year away from their wedding, but thats fine to do the announcement and then send out the invites
HTH!

Congrats and welcome to the site. If your engagement party won't be until next August, then I don't see the harm in sending out engagement invites this year (if you don't mind spending the extra money). Or you can just wait to send out invites next year if you don't want the extra expense. I think it's definitely too early to send out STD's. Good Luck.

Congratulations!!!!
If you are having an engagement party in the near future, I don't think you need announcements. Here is why- My cousin did it and when we got the announcement & e-party invite we all felt we should send separate gifts.
Neither way is wrong- and I know how exciting it is and how you want everyone to know.
Congrats again!

CONGRATS on your engagment!!!!
I think an engagement announcement is a good idea, especially since you have several years before the wedding.

Congrats on your engagement...and welcome to LIW!!!
It is addicting so be aware!!!
Well...what I did was send out an invite/announcement at the same time. We created an invite with a pic of us that says 'we're engaged' and then it says Please Join us to celebrate our engagement...and then all the party info.
If you want me to show you it....I can FM you. Let me know! Good luck with all the wedding craziness. At least you have a lot of time!

If you want to do an announcement i would do one in the paper instead of individual announcements.
Congrats!!!

Hi, congratulations!! Being that you think you're going to have an engagement party, I would not send out engagement announcements. However, they are not tacky; my parents sent them out for us, but we did not have an e-party. Save the dates would come about a year before your wedding, and are not mandatory. We're not doing them because we feel that our very close family and friends already know the date, and it's not a popular holiday weekend or anything. Also, you don't need to send thank you's for receiving just a card and not a gift.

Welcome and congrats to you!
If I were you I would send out engagement announcements ONLY if the E-party is a year away. People tend to send gifts when they get an announcement, THEN they will give you a gift for an e-party.
If you are going to have the e-party in the next 6 months, just send an invite to the party that will do.
Good luck!

CONGRATS!!! Welcome to the site and happy planning!!!
I think sending out announcements are a cute idea and I think it is fine if you space things out...I would send out the announcements now, then wait a while for your STD's about 8 months before your wedding....
Good luck!

COngrats and welcome!!!
Well here's is what I would do. First off I wouldn't wait a year for the engagement party. It doesn't have to be anything huge but remember you will probably see everyone you would invite to it within this next year. So they would have seen your ring, been excited for you... maybe even send a gift. Then to throw a party so far away might seem like you are just looking for gifts. This is just my opinion of course.
I would try and do the party a little sooner, the standard (which is not necessary to follow) is about 4 months or so after the engagement. The gifts you would get will certainly help you to save for that dream wedding you want
So I would try and plan the party and just send out the engagement party invites. STD's as you said.. it's waaaayyyy to early, and I don't know of people who even do engagement announcement's anymore.

Thank you so much everyone!
What I think I'll do is talk to FI and discuss wether we are having the engagement party for sure and if we are when and where we should do it That way we can send out Engagement announcements to everyone that would be invited to the wedding considering is so far away.
Then, only for the people that are invited to the E-party we could send engagement announcements and the invitations together, or maybe combine them.
Because I don't want people thinking I'm fishing for money hahaha
