Hey everyone! I have to say I'm so in love with this site already! I just got engaged on the 7th, and my situation is pretty unique because of financial reasons FI and I are planning quite a long engagement, a 2013 wedding to be exact (LONG, I know haha) meanwhile we will save up together for our dream wedding, even though we need forever and a day lol Anyway this is where it gets a little tricky for me:
FH's parents want to send out engagement announcements to friends and family, just to make it a bit more formal but do people usually send engagement announcements. We also will send out some thank you cards for a couple of people who sent us congratulation cards, which we thought were really nice
I'm not sure, but what I see most people do is send out the STD's only right? But for my situation I definetely think it's silly to send out STD's for a wedding that is basically 4 years ahead.
So what do you girls think I should do?
Should I send out engagement announcements now, then wait to send the STD's when it's closer to the wedding? or should I just skip the Engament announcements and wait until it's time to send the STD's?
We are also thinking of having an Engament party sometime in the near future (could range from a couple of months to about august of next year, we don't know yet) Would it be too much to send out Engagement announcements, and then maybe soon after send Engagement party invites? Because we didn't decide on a date for the e-party yet.
Sorry for the really long and annoying avalanche of questions haha but this is driving me nuts Because FI and I were actually gonna go get engagement announcements done today but I just wanted different opinions beforehand
Anyway Thanks you all soo much in advance

Congrats and Welcome!! I think sending engagement announcements now would be nice since you are having a long engagement. I would not send STDs until a year before your wedding date.

Welcome wedding newbie! Since your wedding is a few years away, buy the books! Get the magazines and look at all the different timelines to give you a better idea of 'what and when.' So helpful! Congratulations to you!!

YAY congrats and welcome. I would send the engagement announcement when you figure out when you want your engagement party.
Save the dates should be sent 1 year-6months before the wedding.
Congrats and happy planning!

Congrats on your engagement! I think its nice of FIL's to want to announce your engagement. You can send STD's when you have booked a RH and have more plans in place. It shouldn't be more than a year before.

Congrats on your engagement and 3 years are going to fly by with all the planning and chatting on LIW
If you are totally against sending out an annoucement to everyone maybe have them put on in the local paper and send copies to friends.
But announcements, Eng invities and STDs are not too much with a long engagment.

Thank you everyone for all your warm welcomes and opinions!
We decided to just send out Engagement announcements, because we also decided to not have an enagement party because of financial reasons
and also, sorry I didn't come on here sooner.. I've just been crazy busy with Dental Hygiene school already, and it's only the first few weeks.. haha I'm afraid of what's coming ahead
Anyway, again thank you all so much, you all have been very sweet! It's a good thing my wedding date is so far, because I'll get to see all you beautiful brides-to-be become actual brides!!!

Welcome and congrats! (you are gonna get addicted to this site )
I see no problem in sending out an engagement announcement. You could get postcard announcements on Vistaprint for dirt cheap (or even free!) and just send them out to family members and close friends.

Congratulations.....I had a very short engagement so I have no advice in that direction but the ladies here are invaluable as you already can see. Congrats on your engagement , and for finding this site so soon........Welcome.

welcome & congrats!
Well I think you have some time, so you could do Announcements now, E-party invites before the party, and save the dates maybe a year before
HTH!

Welcome and Congrats!!!
Definitely send out STDs. No one made a rule where you have to send them out closer to your wedding date.
Did you ever think of have multiple (but small) e-parties? You can have them for different groups (i.e. close family, extended family, just friends, etc.). Granted you've probably already been told that, so whoever said it before me, ITA!!
But don't stress! Have fun!!!!!

Congratulations!!
Engagement announcements are a great idea. TO send save the dates now I think is a little crazy - most people would lose them by the time the wedding comes!!
Do engagement announcements now...std's around the time of the engagement party or even later.
I handed out my save the dates 2 years in advance (when I had my engagement party).
