You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

You have no idea what it's like to have the Blue Law on Sundays! No shopping ANYWHERE! It's the WORST!

This area of Jersey has two of the greatest malls, and you can't shop on a Sunday at them! SO frustrating......I still am not used to that from moving here from NY. Sundays I still get up early and want to do a million things. You can't even go to a KMART.

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

in Bergen County we have what is called the blue Law. It prohibits the purchasing of any 'luxury items' on Sunday's. So all the stores are closed. Even in Costco for example, the aisles where you can buy like a toaster say are roped off. You can buy food and books and cd's - but that's it. So bookstores are the only thing open. No clothes, shoes, gifts, makeup, electronics, pet supplies, etc.

I always shop on Sundays, I guess I would become an internet shopper addict if that was the case......

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

Back in '97 I lived in Bergen County. I forgot all about that stupid Blue Law until you mentioned it. I guess I'd blocked it from my memory! Jersey is so screwed up. I hated living in that area (I lived in Lodi). Just about every weekend I'd drive back to Long Island and stay with my parents.

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

I remember when LI had the Blue laws. My dad went to get some big trash bags so we could bag some leaves on a Sunday and the isle was roped off....he went down it anyway and a clerk told him he could not purchase this item (i think then it was before 12...like beer now)

He was amazed being that he came from Queens...where you could get almost anything you needed and at time of the day...and if Queens didnt have it...you hopped over the bridge to NYC!!

I am mixed over the idea of Blue Laws. They were in place so that people could go and worship and have a day with thier families. It was a good thing...way back when....but now with both parents working...weekends is the only time to do the 'running' around erands and could you imagine if you could only do it on Sat??

Wow, I never knew that. The only Jersey law that I could think of was not being allowed to pump your own gas.

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

I would think that cd's and books are ' luxury items'. That really bites. I could never live in a place that you can't shop on Sundays, ( but with the way that I like to shop- it propably wouldn't be a bad idea to move there...)

Same here. I sometimes miss them or maybe it's the fact that I miss the lack of traffic.

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

I could see their thought process behind it, but also think it's definitely out of date for today's lifestyle.

As it was said earlier, for most people, the weekends are all the time you have to get your errands done.

Franklin Covey is like that - they are a Mormon company and nationwide do not open at all on Sunday's. They even had a sign outside their closed doors that said they wanted their employees to spend a day with their families.
I'd alway forget and try to head over there on a Sunday!

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

Although it's inconvienent and maybe to a certain extent carried a little too far -I think it's nice. A lot of poeple have forgotten what Sundays are all about- church & family. But maybe that's because it's always been sacred in my family. o well! ETS: I understand that not everyone goes to church so it could be frustrating to them.

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...

I think thats ridiculous - but its right up there with no purchasing alcohol before noon, and only being able to buy liquor/wine in a liquor store. And liqour stores being closed on SUndays.

Here in CA, the supermarkets are lined with beer, wine, liquor, and you can get them any time of the day.

Another thing to get used to when we move back...we're actually off to a favorite winery now since we don't have to worry about that yet

As for Sundays being about church (as posted by endlessluv) - what about the separation of church and state? State laws should not be enforcing religious customs. And anyway, its only a limited amout of religions that hold Sunday as the sacred day.
