Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
I wasn't attacking you, just pointing out that sunday does not equal church to many people/religions.

A lot of poeple have forgotten what Sundays are all about- church & family.
The blue laws were born out of religious customs (only the northeast/original colonies have such restrictions). I just don't believe that the majority should be policed by the customs of any one religion. Thats all - didn't mean to offend.

I think thats ridiculous - but its right up there with no purchasing alcohol before noon, and only being able to buy liquor/wine in a liquor store. And liqour stores being closed on SUndays.
Here in CA, the supermarkets are lined with beer, wine, liquor, and you can get them any time of the day.
Lisa, I cannot tell you how many times I've had to remind Jeff of this since we moved back! It's SO ANNOYING!

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
I think in Bergen it has nothing to do with religion- it has to do with traffic! The traffic is bad enough on River Road- it's only one lane each way- and it's filled w. people from the city who want to pay less taxes, go to Target, etc...

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
I wouldn't mind some Blue Laws around here, and I'm glad my liquor store decided to stay closed on Sundays to instead spend time with his family. I don't think anyone ever suffered for lack of alcohol. I am usually prepared in advance for Sunday parties and if I find myself with my nose pressed against the liquor store window on a Sunday, well then, I have a problem! JMOIts nice to be able to travel on Route 17 in NJ on a Sunday at a pace faster than the usual crawl....

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
Certain parts of Bergen are very crowded due to a lot of people from the city coming in to shop & take advantage of our low taxes and no-tax clothing. SO- I think the Blue Law is a way of having at least 1 weekend day traffic free

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
I always forget and want to go to Target in Edgewater on Sundays.
I have lived here for 10 years. If I could TELL you how many times I have showed up at the Target in Edgewater on a Sunday and been like...'hm...wonder why there are no cars?'..You'd think I would REMEMBER by now!!!!
It is frustrating. I understand the reasons behind it in a way as far as people being able to close their shops and not have to work on Sunday, but quite honestly, our malls are so popular because of the no tax, that on Saturday it's like literally mayhem with all the people that come in from LI and NYC to shop - it's really difficult to have one day out of the week to get errands done. And that is the thing - it's not just - oh I can't go buy a shirt at BCBG - it's like AND I can't get a new cell phone contract, AND I can't buy dog chews at Petsmart. It's irritating. The things that you just can't fit during the week and that you don't want to have to site in 2 hours worth of traffice on Rte. 17 on a Saturday fighting the shoppers. The funny thing is , I know I can just drive to NY to shop on Sundays but then I think - how can I do that when I know if I just wait until the following Saturday I don't have to pay the tax!
Making it worse, they opened an IKEA off of Rt. 4 (which is right near the biggest mall around) and that is causing mass confusion as well!
Ah well.....nothing I can do I guess!

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
Well you know how aweful the traffic is on Saturday- it would be that bad on Sunday too.. that's why they have the blue laws- so people can visit families, etc and not have to sit in all the mall traffic.edited to say- you can always go to the mall in Jersey City- or go anywhere in Hudson since that's all open.

What a inconvenience. Sometimes the only time I have to go shopping is on Sundays.

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
Man, I can't imagine living in that part of Jersey, my beloved Birth State. The main thing that bothers me about Blue Laws is that any Jew living in Bergen County that is Shomer Shabbos (won't drive or conduct business on Saturday) either loses their errand day or has to drive extra far to do what they need to.
I love buying gas in NJ though - I'll go out of my way to do so!!!!!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? This is the first time I have ever heard this. That STINKS!Another x for Jersey on my list of places to look for a house. If I can't buy a fur coat on Sunday what will I do?
Seriously though, that's retarded.

Re: You don't know how lucky LI girls have it...
Having formerly worked retail I think the idea behind it is great. However, like others said, it doesn't make sense in today's lifestyle.I do think that 11-5 is enough, though. This is what is used to be but over the years stores' hours have gotten longer and longer on Sunday. Macy's is open from 10-7 if I'm not mistaken. That's too much.
As far as the liquor law goes, while I agree that it's silly, Kate has a point about making sure you have the wine for the Sunday brunch mimosas early in the week.
