As I begin the hunt for 'the one' (as in attire - Ive got the hubby all set) I question ...
How much is too much?
Its hard to say 'budget' at this point so I am just curious on average what is everyone spending on their dress (not including alterations, tax etc)? Ive spoken to a few friends who seem to be coming in with much lower prices then what I have tried on!
Just curious ... ?

Re: Your Dress ...
$598 at David's Bridal. Couldnt be happier with it, dress looks like it cost at least 3 times as much.

Re: Your Dress ...
I was hoping to spend under $2000 but ended up paying about $2700 after tax and before alterations at POB Manhasset. I'm totally in love with it so ultimately it just meant I take it easy on the veil and accessories.

i'm probably going to get beat up for saying this but mine was about $6500. however, i went in assuming it would be about $2000 and happened to fall in love with mine.
ill protect you! lol
no in all seriousness everyones different, i didnt want to spend so much on my dress but i did lol, somepeople skimp out in other places so they can splurge ont he dress or photography or whatever else... bottom line is have a realistic number in your head that you really cant go above (considering all other expenses) and work from there, once you find the one, maybe price around to see if anyone has a better deal, also keep in mind alteration prices at each salon

Re: Your Dress ...
i wanted to keep my dress around $5000 and that's about where I'll end up after tax and stuff.
if you find a designer you like, look for trunk sales. i got mine at a kenneth pool trunk sale and saved 15%!

Re: Your Dress ...
While trying on dresses I gave them a $1500 cap and I ended up with a dress that was just slightly over my budget :)

Re: Your Dress ...
We were advised to devote 10% of our overall budget for my dress and accessories. So figure it out that way.
I happened to come way under that, partly because I borrowed jewelry and because I fell in love with a dress was well within my price range.

Re: Your Dress ...
I got a Maggie Dress which is usually about 1,000 before any taxes. However, I went to a Maggie trunk show and ended up getting it for $ 695.00!!! Shop around, dont fall for the first price until you do your research!

Re: Your Dress ...
Negotiate and call around for sure. Every bridal salon will come down at least a little. A friend of mine fell in love with a dress and called Burton's in Melville and they had it for $900 less.
I think 'too much' is when you get anxiety over shelling out the cash.
We set a budget but when I found 'the one' and looked at the price tag it was about $3500 less than what I had thought I was going to spend. Needless to say I did a happy dance.

Re: Your Dress ...
I had a budget of about $5K going into it, and that's what I told all the women at te bridal salons I went to.. I really didn't want to spend that much just cause you only wear it one day, but didn't want to close myself off to something great... I ended up trying on a dress and fell in love.. Thought it was going to be like 6k or something and was determined to spend whatever it cost, and it ended up only being $2K... I was actually thrilled cause my mom gave me the difference to put towards our honeymoon. My best advice, like the other girls said, is tell them that you can't spend more than X amount and you should be okay, most aren't out to trick you and throw a more expensive dress in the mix

Re: Your Dress ...
I paid $850 for my dress; it was on sale at David's Bridal. My friend paid $3,000 for her dress at a bridal boutique and her's was also on sale.
I'm going to a wedding next week where the bride paid $500 for her dress.

Re: Your Dress ...
I got a Maggie Sottero dress at Paradise Bridal for 1800. I don't know what the alterations are yet. But, just to add to the other comments, you also want to keep in mind that if you want to find the dress you love but don't have a ton of money to spend, stay away from the more high end retailers like Kleinfelds, who are going to have a limited selection of lower price dresses (under 2K). That way you are falling in love with something that feels extraordinary without breaking the bank. The high end places usually have a more limited selection so there is a possibility that you will be pushed into a higher price range than you are comfortable with or get swept away in a moment and fall in love with something that might be unattainable.

Re: Your Dress ...
I initially said i wanted to spend 2,000 on dress since i wanted to save 1,000 for veil, shoes and earrings. But once i found the dress the budget went out the door.
it was 3,400 and 831 for the veil (yeah crazy amount for a piece of tulle, but i luv it) and 595 alterations at Kleinfeld.
