As I begin the hunt for 'the one' (as in attire - Ive got the hubby all set) I question ...
How much is too much?
Its hard to say 'budget' at this point so I am just curious on average what is everyone spending on their dress (not including alterations, tax etc)? Ive spoken to a few friends who seem to be coming in with much lower prices then what I have tried on!
Just curious ... ?

I got a Maggie Sottero dress at Paradise Bridal for 1800. I don't know what the alterations are yet. But, just to add to the other comments, you also want to keep in mind that if you want to find the dress you love but don't have a ton of money to spend, stay away from the more high end retailers like Kleinfelds, who are going to have a limited selection of lower price dresses (under 2K). That way you are falling in love with something that feels extraordinary without breaking the bank. The high end places usually have a more limited selection so there is a possibility that you will be pushed into a higher price range than you are comfortable with or get swept away in a moment and fall in love with something that might be unattainable.
VERY CORRECT!!!!! When i first started searching i went to lillets and RK bridal and all the dress i luv were at amazing prices, but ofcourse i couldnt skip out on not going to kleinfeld, especially since i live in Manhattan so its very close.
But if you have a limited budget dont go there, becuz u will luv a dress that is over budget... =(

Re: Your Dress ...
I don't think I've ever posted the actual price of my dress, but I think it was in the neighborhood of $6800 - that is for the three pieces. Sheath gown, tulle skirt, and sparkly belt. I loved my dress and while I wanted to thinking about the $, it was worth every penny that day.
ETA: I went over budget, which was supposed to be $5K. But I did get it during a trunk show and it was custom made to my measurements. Also, we bought it during a gift card event at Saks and got a $450 gift card, which went toward the alterations, which were minor, given it was made especially for me! But it included a hem and the bustle.

Re: Your Dress ...
I went in with a number i wanted to spend, and managed to go over that number even though I received a discount once you figure in alterations and tax and the price of my veil.
Do not base your budget around those surrounding you. Everyone has their own level of 'just right.' Talk it out with whomever if paying for the dress and agree a number. (also allow for some wiggle room).

i'm probably going to get beat up for saying this but mine was about $6500. however, i went in assuming it would be about $2000 and happened to fall in love with mine.
aww no way. why would any one have a prob with this. having that kind of $ to spend is a blessing and you obv work hard & deserve it. my dress was 1k, but they gave me my slip for free and iam not payinf for alterations bc my best friends mother is the alterations manager :)

Re: Your Dress ...
mine i think was $1300. for me, i couldnt justify spending in $3K and up. i just would rather have spent that money elsewhere. with that being said, i went to teh stores looking for $1500 and less and kept my browsing to certain designers. i went to bridal suite of bay shore

Re: Your Dress ...
I set a budget of 2K and came in at exactly that including my alterations. I got it at bridal reflections in massapequa at the James Clifford Trunk show- at the trunk show they give you an extra 10% off usually.

Re: Your Dress ...
I had a budget of $2000 (before alterations). The dress I fell in love with was $2495 at most stores. I eventually found it at one store for $2050 which was very low. I'm suprised at how easy it was to negotiate. We told the salon I ended up purchasing from this and they ended up selling me my dress for $1900. :)
My advice - definitly shop around! i must have tried on my dress at least 15 times and in the end was very happy with the price.
