Your professional last name...

Original post by kaklesmay

I'm not talking legally, but will you keep your maiden name at work?

I've established myself as Jane Doe in my career and I dont know if I want to start over as Jane Smith

It will be a hassle when clients are referring me or things are published about me.

ANyone else thinking about this?

I am torn about this one. Its going to be a hassle eaither way-- if I change at work, I have to make sure all of my clients can still get in touchw ith me (especially the forgetful ones) but if I keep a separate name for home and work, I feel like that would get a little crazy. I think I will probably change it for both.

I'm completly torn about it too. This is a huge fight for us to. Added to the hassle of changing it is that I really don't like his last name and I love my last name. He feels like it's part of getting married. For him I think it's more an ego thing than anything else. Arg! I don't know what to do!

I'm definitely changing my name completely, and it should help me. I'm a biologist and will have only had 1-2 papers published under my maiden name. My FH's last name is so much less common, so when people do pubmed searches for me (to look up my publications), the only ones that will come up are me and my FFIL. If you did a pubmed search on my maiden name, 600 PAGES of publications come up!
