Your thoughts/opinions on favors...

Your thoughts/opinions on favors...

In case you haven't seen me chat up in here. My wedding is diverse to say the very least.

Here's what I was thinking...
We are going for a Fall Theme next year. Budget is ultra tight!

You know those little bamboo steamers you get when you sometimes order chinese appetizers?
Well the make even smaller versions of those in box or circle form. That basic theme also happens to be a family favorite for keeping tortillas warm.

I was thinking of taking those and placing a small piece of fabric (to emulate the tortilla thing) of our colors inside then placing the red envelope (to keep with the Chinese thing) inside with a few colored Hershey kisses (you can buy them in wrap colors in Roosevelt Feild) and on top using silk flowers/silk leaves (orange/brown gerber daises & maple leaves) to accent.

If I sound like I'm planning to early, it's cause I have to pay for the wedding myself and make the favors by hand. whoohoo!

IMO, you should NOT spend alot of favors. People throw them out.

Your idea sounds fine. keep it simple.

Re: Your thoughts/opinions on favors...

See..
Now that's the tough part.

I SOOOOOOOOOOOO agree with no one keeps the favors Idea.

Problem is.. Chinese tradition demands that we (the bridal couple) pass out uhmmmm Red Envelopes. Each one has money in it.

Not much like $5 - $20. But my issue is excuse me, but I'm paying for your meal aren't I?

It really rubs me the wrong way. I don't like the idea of paying my guests.

So I figured this method I could put a buck in all the envelopes. Those at the wedding who don't know the tradition will learn something new. I won't be broke, I have given the traditional Chinese my token of appreciation and all is well, I hope.

I think it's a very great idea. You put a lot of thought into it and I think that's really sweet! I think you should go for it...your guest will appreciate it!

How about passing out the red envelopes with a note saying a donation was made to a fav. charity. Then you can decide how much to spend and your family gets red envelopes with '$' in them. ??

We did get however, a little jar filled with the cutest origami birds and stars!! it was beautiful!!

Re: Your thoughts/opinions on favors...

Instead of a dollar bill you could use the $1 coin. It's gold toned & will look like you made a little extra effort. Or, why not usse chinese money. Forgive my ignorance, I don't know what it's called.

Veronica! I'm chinese and I can tell you that we as guests don't expect $$$$ in red envelopes -- especially the married ones! The red envelopes are for the little kids / unmarried people -- and the groom's / bride's parents give them not you! You as the bride and groom get lots of red envelopes (hopefully filled with more than $5-$10), jewelry, etc at the tea ceremony! DEFINITELY DO THE TEA CEREMONY! Simple / personal favors are good -- I like how you incorporate the Chinese tradition -- red envelops are very nice -- but don't feel the need to fill it with $5-$10.
Your wedding will be sooooo cool -- soooo diverse -- mine will be sooo monotone!

Re: Your thoughts/opinions on favors...

I love the whole bamboo steamers idea -- the red envelopes are an added touch -- but the old school Chinese people would probably open it to see what's inside -- so I say go with one of the board member's idea and put a $1 coin in there -- so they can feel it instead of yanking it open. Wish I could be as creative.

Re: Your thoughts/opinions on favors...

Yeah.. I love the tiny steamer idea too..
Problem is finding them.

I gotta get to Flushing or Chinatown cause I'm having very little luck.

If you see any FM me! hehe

Yeah, I never intended $5-10, I was going to put a single dollor but the coin (espically the gold one) is a great idea... actually drags in my fathers american indian hertiage (go figure right?)

Re: Your thoughts/opinions on favors...

Not sure if this is tacky but if you can't find the small ones -- you can use the bigs ones and put multiple favors for people -- it'll be just the Chinese style -- put it in the center and share! Ha Ha Ha!

I love the idea and I know exactly how you feel. We're paying for everything ourselves too and I'm definitely shopping (not necessarily buying) early too! Please post pics when you finish one - I'd love to see!

OMG what a creative idea Catty!!!

One big one on each table is only 10 such steamers.. MUCH cheaper and I can even put more silk followers on top!!

WONDERFUL!!!!
