Anyone elses white gold ring starting too look like cr*p?

Hey

My ring is white gold and lately i have noticed that it is getting these dark spots on it. I had a horrible horrible experience when I got it sized and since then I noticed these spots. At first i thought it looked burnt or something but i dont think it is because I have been noticed more of these spots lately.

It is also very scratched, I know i cant do anything about that.. but its only 4 months old and looks like i had it for years.

Anyone know what those spots are?

white gold is rhodium-plated yellow gold. eventually the rhodium plating wears away and you see the gold underneath. depending on the acidity of your skin this could take weeks or months. you can take it in and have it redipped and it will look like new.

I don't know what the spots are. I wonder if you can have it re-dipped to help with the scratches and spots. I know mine is really scratched up and startes to look yellowish sometimes but once I clean it (with windex and dish soap) it's back to new.

Re: Anyone elses white gold ring starting too look like cr*p?

I actually had it re-dipped after i got it sized.. not that long ago and I have seen these spots ever since. I just thought it was weird cause I know that white gold will eventally turn and you have to have it re-dipped...but in less than 4 months?

hmm. I dont know. These spots are not yellowish either.. they are a dark brown almost black color.

oh well. thanks for your help

I dont know about the dark spots -- its possible there is some kind of weird chemical reaction? Maybe the jeweler used something weird when they resized your ring

What does it actually mean to have it redipped? How is it done?

my e-ring is platinum (a solitaire) and my wedding band is a white gold diamond band. it's true platinum does scratch more easily but you can get the scratches buffed out pretty easily without losing any of the metal.

My wedding band isn't scratched, but it's still pretty new.

The most noticable difference to me is that platinum is significantly heavier

They just cleaned it and dipped it in Rhodium.. but who knows. I had such a bad experience that i dont even want to go back there. Might just ask the jewlers when I shop for my band what they think. Do you know how much it costs to have it polished and dipped in Rhodium again? Normally this wouldn't bother me so much but my FH is kind of upset that my 4month old ring looks beat up

I dont think it's more than $15 or $20 to have it redipped, but I can't be sure -- never had it done. As far as polishing, when I bought my wedding band the jeweler polished my e-ring (purchased elsewhere) for me at no charge.

Re: Anyone elses white gold ring starting too look like cr*p?

our jewler had a addon to the rings that was $15 or so if we ever need a re dip we both get it as many times as we need it for the rest of our lives

we got ours at Jareds i'm not sure if there is one on LI though

it is so worth the trip it's such a nice store
