Beach Boys: 'God Only Knows'

Hi everyone,

I think someone (nsgraham?) recently posted about this song, but I can't find the thread. We're thinking about using 'God Only Knows' by the Beach Boys as our first dance. It's one of his absolute favorite songs, and I like it too, but I'm not positive that the lyrics are appropriate. For example:

I may not always love you
But as long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I'll make you so sure about it...

And:

If you should ever leave me
The world would still go on believe me
[don't know this line... something like 'But it would mean nothing to me']
So what good would living do me?

Maybe I'm 'overthinking' this, so I thought I'd ask your opinions. Does the song seem nice and romantic or does it seem too sad and creepy?

I love that song...but you have to go with your gut...my 1st song hopefully will be Anthrax nothing surprises me! I am sure that no one will pick up on it - Pet Sounds is the best!!

Even before I met my fiance I always thought that the phrases 'god only know what I'd be without you' would be perfect for a first dance song. However, once I got engaged and thought about it, like you said, the first line int he song is 'I may not always love you'. I just thought that it wasn't a proper way to begin your life together. Kind of sounds pessimistic. At least that was my opinion.

I love this song!!

It was almost the song I chose to dance with my Dad too. I mean come on how many times when you were growing up did you hate your parents

Yeah it was me! I'm thinking about it for a last dance. It is really sad and a little insane though, once you listen to it:

It's like - I would die without you, or I would survive, but I'd want to kill myself.

Yeah, I don't know. Not for first dance, definetely. We're doing 'Songbird' by Eva Cassidy, which is also sad, because she died at 33. But it's so beautiful.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I'm sort of leaning toward not using it... but I've gotta think of an alternative! 'Sea of Love' is currently a strong contender.

okay, since this is basically a love actually soundtrack discussion, does anyone else totally love the wyclef song about him saying 'your're my girl, you're my wife, you're the love of my life, you're my lady'...i love that song!!!
