Re: LIRR: Do spouses ride free?
yes, but you cannot use it as your daily free ride to work. not meant to sound attacking, i apologize. my fh is a conductor on the lirr and when we are married, i will get a spouses pass.

Re: LIRR: Do spouses ride free?
Thanks. I am so PO'd right now b/c I just lost my monthly ticket and there's nothing I can do, it's like losing cash. My DH is an electrician for the LIRR and I was wondering if he could get me a pass for the rest of the month. : (

Re: LIRR: Do spouses ride free?
this is not an official quote from fh, but, if you need to ride for the rest of the month, if you have a spouses pass, you may ride. but only until you get a new monthly tix next month. fh says there are spouses the ride the rails everyday for free and the conductors 'look the other way.' give it a shot and the worst thing that will happen is they tell you to get a monthly.

Re: LIRR: Do spouses ride free?
Well I wound up buying a 10 trip ticket. UGH! Another $120! So this month I've spent about 420 on commuting.
And for only 3 weeks.
I'd feel weird using a spouse's card, but it would be soooooo cool to do it. $300 a month savings!

Re: LIRR: Do spouses ride free?
FH's Dad worked at Hillside for years as a gang foreman - over the summer, we ALL (FILs, FH & I) went into the city for a show and FFIL showed his card (he's retired now, so its a yellow card) and the conductor just walked right past us! FH & I were planning on paying for our tickets, but we didn't have to.

Re: LIRR: Do spouses ride free?
i was only posting what my fh told me about the spouses pass. i was under the assumption that if i work in the city, after i am married to my fh, i cannot abuse the spouses pass. sometimes the condutor will give you a hard time and sometimes not. it depends on who the conductor is and whether or not he wants to give you a hard time.

Re: LIRR: Do spouses ride free?
I have a spouse pass and YES you can use it everyday. You have to go to Hillside facility and get your picture taken (make sure you bring your marriage certificate as proof) It's a yearly pass that you can use ANYTIME you ride the LIRR. I commute everyday and never have a problem. My DH will meet me in the city some nights just to ride the train home with me (he's so sweet
) and he'll just take his pass out and whom ever is with him rides for free as well. I've been riding with my DH even before we were even married and never once has any conductor said anything. Even when we stay late and go into closed cars they never say anything as long as one of us has a pass. Most conductors don't bother you at all.. and if they do, tell them to *$#* off. It should be common courtesy not say anything. The ones that do are ROOKIES and don't know better.. The old timers that have been on the railroad don't say a word.
On a sad note
Tuesday night a man that my DH works with in his yard committed suicide. He jumped a 7 story car garage and died instantly. He was 62/63 years old. 5 minutes earlier and my DH would have spoken to him, but unfortunately he was too late
. My poor husband has been a wreck for 2 days now. He left behind a wife and 3 kids.

My grandfather worked for the railroad for years, but he passed away over 15 years ago and my grandmother and anyone who is with her still rides for free!
Unfortunatley, I couldn't bring her with me to work every day!

YES, he worked in the Huntington yard. The weird thing about it is the man who died was always on a routine. In the 7 years he worked in Huntington he never went into the parking garage. The elevators weren't working so he had to walk up the 7 flights to jump, and at first everyone thought he might have been chasing someone who stole something from him.. but, so far the police said no foul play was involved, but it's still being investigated. My DH was interviewed by 4 different detectives the night it happened & he still cant believe he jumped. It's so sad.
Did you DH know him??

its says right on the spouses pass 'not to be used for daily commute.' its not a free pass to ride the lirr every day. if it gets abused, it will be revoked. and the ROOKIES, are just doing their jobs the way they were trained to, not because they don't know any better. and its best never to tell a conductor to F#^%( off, then your arse will be off the train at the next stop with the MTA police waiting for you.

I never had a problem so far, and I never heard that you cant use it for daily use. What's the point of having it then?? LOL
Once the conductors see the pass they just nod and say 'thank you' and keep walking. The reason why i'm saying rookies is because the guys who just start usually are by the book and once they learn the in's and out's they dont worry so much. My DH was the same way at first.. always nervous about this and that.. but after a few years you realize how things work.
And, I would never say to F(#*#&@ off to one of them.. I was being sarcastic. If they give you a hard time it's because that individual is just being a jerk and not being courteous. I've seen conductors give ppl a hard time, but my husband always says some of them are just miserable. Once they see you work for the LIRR or a wife of a LIRR employee they say 'sorry' and just walk away.

i see what you are saying. i was just repeating what my fh told me about the passes. he says that he doesn't even look at people's faces half the time, only at the ticket/pass. i know that you would never say F*(%) off to a conductor or anyone who works for the LIRR, but there are some people who have to my fh and its not a good idea. i see that you were being sarcastic, but people read it the wrong way.its all good.

Some conductors are by the book, but I would say 9 out of 10 just look and see the MTA logo and just walk by, they dont question anything. I cant imagine anyone giving a LIRR wife a hard time. It's a brotherhood, like being a police officer.. giving a wife/daughter/grandmother, etc of a LIRR employee a hard time is just not heard of.
I had to call my husband just to ask him about it and he said it would never even get to that point where someone would even stop you from using your spouse pass. He's never heard of anyone saying anything about using it everyday. He said his gang forman's wife still uses her pass from 1986!! everyday and nobody even says anything, and his daughter uses hers everyday to travel to school.
So, if someone gives you a hard time about your pass, I would question the reasoning and basically shrug it off cause the chances are they are not very nice and dont understand the courtesy rule for family.
