Scott Peterson, the 644th person awaiting lethal injection in California, is escorted to San Quentin State Prison.
Peterson Taken to Death Row
SAN FRANCISCO (March 17) - Scott Peterson has become the 644th prisoner awaiting death in the execution chamber of San Quentin State Prison, the infamous lockup that overlooks the same bay where the body of his pregnant wife, Laci, was discarded.
Peterson, who was sentenced to death Wednesday, left the San Mateo County jail to San Quentin at 3:10 a.m. Thursday. Secured with leg irons and shackles around his wrists and waist, Peterson was led away in a white, unmarked van for drive from Redwood City, south of San Francisco, to the prison, about 20 miles north of the city.
The 32-year-old former fertilizer salesman entered San Quentin, shortly after 4 a.m.
Prison officials had Peterson remove his clothing and a bulletproof vest supplied by the sheriff for his safety, San Quentin spokesman Vernon Crittendon said on NBC's ''Today'' show. A body search, medical exam and DNA test were conducted, and a photo was taken for identification.
''During the process, there were moments where he would give that nervous smile,'' Crittendon said. ''He was extremely polite with all of the staff as he addressed them as we moved him through the process.''
Peterson also will get a shower, a haircut, state-issued clothing and will be assigned an identification number. Then, a counselor will classify him according to his criminal, educational, medical and psychological histories - a process that could take several weeks.
''Grade B'' prisoners, deemed a threat to themselves or others, get limited privileges - just 10 hours a week of outdoor exercise, alone in a small cage.
''From what I hear, he hasn't given the staff (at the jail in Redwood City) any problems,'' Corrections Department spokeswoman Terry Thornton said, so this classification may be unlikely for Peterson
''Grade A'' inmates are allowed to spend five hours a day outside in a common yard, where they can exercise and play chess. They can have showers three times a week, attend religious services and receive mail, phone calls and visitors. The prisoners also may keep a television - which they pay for themselves - in their cells.
Most of the state's condemned prisoners are housed at San Quentin. San Quentin also houses 5,300 other prisoners, but they don't interact with the condemned inmates. Fifteen condemned women are at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, but they would be brought to San Quentin to be executed.
Death row, built in 1934 and designed to handle 68 inmates, is actually three buildings. In the original death row, now reserved for the most senior and well-behaved men, inmates walk around a small common area secured by bars and doors. Amenities include a tiled shower room.
In one of the makeshift death rows - a building known as East Block, where Peterson will most likely live - inmates stay locked in their 5-by-9-foot cells, except when they are outside. There are no common areas; the cells are stacked in tiers fronted by narrow walkways.
There also is no shower room, so two regular cells on each tier have been converted into showers. Plastic sheeting taped to the bars keeps most of the water from spraying onto the tiers below, but a steady stream of water slides down nonetheless.
Peterson received his death sentence more than two years after his eight-months-pregnant wife disappeared on Christmas Eve 2002. Prosecutors said Peterson killed her and then dumped her body in San Francisco Bay. The badly decomposed bodies of Laci and her fetus washed ashore four months later.
Still, there is no telling whether Peterson will ever receive a lethal injection. Of the 38 states with the death penalty, California moves the slowest toward executions. As a result, condemned inmates here are more likely to die in prison.
Peterson likely will sit for more than five years before he is appointed an attorney for his first, mandatory appeal to the California Supreme Court.
A big reason for the delays is that there are too many inmates with too few lawyers willing to volunteer for the relatively low-paying job. Peterson joins about 120 others who do not yet have lawyers. And even when an attorney is appointed, there are no deadlines for California's high court to act.

We have to wait 5 years to see him die??? I bet it will probably be longer too...What an animal...I hope somebody kills him in jail.
I was reading yahoo news yesterday about how Laci's mother was telling Scott that she had to bury Laci without arms to hold her own baby and without a head. I couldn't help but cry my eyes out.

Re: Scott Peterson moved to Death Row today.
You know what I still find so unbelievable is how the hell did he do it, clean it up so well with all of the scientific stuff we have these days. nothing to put him at the scene physically than words- it makes me sick, that he did this, but I want to hear the proof- not that I dont think he did it, just want to know how he did it and what the hell did the forensics and police miss? you watch all these crime shows on court tv and they have these lights to trace blood etc, but nothing in the home, the car, the boat but a piece of Laci's hair, I guess my angle is to find out so that it doesnt happen again and with our modernized technology we dont miss something again and leave it up to a jury to decide- what if they let him off like blake & OJ- ugh so sickening, sorry to vent

A piece of laci's hair in a pair of plyers. Cement Blocks in the boat, Him dying his hair and growing a mustache and beerd and heading for the border with 10,000.00 in cash in his pocket and his brothers id, the fact that he called his girlfriend FROM HIS MISSING WIFES CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL.

oh no dont get me wrong i think he def is guilty but there is a huge part still missing. and he made himself look guilty with his actions to without a doubt but isnt anyone curious of the actual murder- I dont mean to sound morbid, but anyone can place a piece of hair in plyers, plant the cement blocks and he is a total moron for calling his girlfriend but I still wonder how and when he did it and howcome the police or forensics couldnt find that evidence.
I just feel bad for the family too so many unanswered questions. and it scares me to think that he masterminded a murder to the extent where he got rid of the hard core evidence. that means someone else can do it too.

Re: Scott Peterson moved to Death Row today.
I'm sorry...but how much more concrete proof do you need other than a man who smirks, smiles, stays connected with the 'other woman' and tells her how much he misses her...and seems pretty much unmoved/emotionless at the death of not only his wife, but unborn son? If he did not do it...the very thought of his wifes headless body and the thought of his dead child should have left him a sobbing, unliveable wreck. He is one sick f*** that deserves a thousand times the pain they endured. This story completely breaks my heart.Like someone else stated yesterday...why couldn't he have left her? Walked out and let her be to raise her baby. So so sad..

Re: Scott Peterson moved to Death Row today.
I agree that I think he did it BUT there is that BUT, Im not saying its right but yes a huge part is missing. Doesnt anyone here see that part? that a ton of pertinent factors are missing here and if they werent found it can easily happen again. the umoved emotionless keeping connected to the mistress to me doesnt put him at the murder scene, Im sorry to me thats a sick man literally but everyone handles death shock in all sorts of ways. Im just saying where is the hardcore evidence- so what you are saying is that a man or woman who acts the unusual at an enormous physilogical state- has a mistress, stays in contact with her, in his boat has a piece of hair in plyers and cement blocks in his boat- guilty of murder? And because he changed his appearance too- YES it doesnt look good and will in our society make you look guilty but who's to say he just wasnt trying to get away from it all and that was his way of doing it. its just a little scary that you have a man like oj who continuosly beats on his wife she calls the cops threatens her life to get away with it, blake hires someone to kill his wife or told someone he wanted her dead and gets away with it- doesnt anyone see something wrong? this certainly isnt the way I want the justice system working for me or anyone I know who is innocent or set up- but again IM not implying that I just think the hardcore evidence is missing.

I understand where you're coming from...I mean it would have been great if they could have found something more concrete than what they did...blood, things he used to perform the murders...yes, all of that would have been wonderful to have to be able to throw in his face and say 'HA! WE GOT YOU'.
But its not there. BUT..the fact remains he is where he belongs...and since it'll be years till he dies, maybe they can find more in that time.
But you can't tell me....in the years since this happened, he hasn't had one chance to grieve and react like a human. I don't buy the notion that people react all that differently. A state of shock for a few months? Sure. But no remorse for years? C'mon...the man killed them. No doubt about it in my book. I am so happy he is where he belongs.

he is where he belongs but remember too the media plays a HUGE part in what we see and what we read- so we dont know if he did or didnt grieve.

He is a disturbed sociopathic individual. I work with people like this on a day to day basis in a day treatment setting. They are incapable of remorse which is why he did not demonstrate grief. You would be surprised what people are capable of in these situations. People in their 'right minds' do not do things like this. He is a sick man who committed a heinous crime and he has the ultimate punishment. Justice is served.
