Whiskey Ceremony
I came across this 'age your own whiskey' set on an 'offbeat bride' blog and thought it might me something FH would want to do instead of a unity candle. We had kicked around the idea of a wine ceremony, but this is definitely more his speed. So much of the wedding has been me making solo decisions so far (I even booked the venue without him seeing it) that I want to incorporate things he'll like whenever possible. I showed him the whiskey set and told him how we could each pour a bottle into the barrel and then open it up on our first wedding anniversary. His reply was, 'that's effin awesome.' Lol. That was the most enthusiastic thing he's said about anything wedding related, so I bought it! A unity candle would've fit our budget better, but you can't put a price on your FH's unbridled joy, can you? :)http://www.woodinvillewhiskeyco.com/products/age-your-own-whiskey-kit/

Whiskey Ceremony
Wow this is awesome! I am a whiskey drinker myself, would love to do that. I'm getting married in a Catholic church though, might be kinda hard to pull this one off. Dang it! I wish I could be there to see your ceremony, this sounds so cool!

Gasp I love you, I mean I love it! Your FH took the words right out of my mouth. This is brilliant. I don't know where or when that day we'll fill it up, but it'll be a great Anniversary tradition type thing. On behalf of FH's everywhere, THANK YOU!

Thanks everyone! This was my first fun purchase for the wedding and I'm hoping to find a few more personal touches to make the ceremony feel like 'us.'

Whiskey Ceremony
Update: I might not be doing the whiskey ceremony after all and I'm so bummed about it. When I read all the instructions, it's not as simple as I had thought initially. You have to fully saturate the wooden aging barrel for 3 days, checking it periodically to fill it with more water until you are sure the wood is saturated (during this time, there will be some leakage, so it should be kept in a sink or bathtub or outside--where, in early March, it could freeze LOL). Then, you can pour the unaged whiskey into the barrel. The two 750ml bottles don't fill the barrel all the way, so you have to add filtered water until it's full. The whiskey ages pretty quickly, so they recommend that you do tastings after a few weeks, then a month, etc. And the aging is complete after just a few months. At this point, approximately 30% has evaporated due to the 'angel's share.' So, it's making me wonder, how much will be left after a year when we finally open it? Will I have paid $175 for one 750ml bottle of whiskey? And will we be missing the full experience by not doing tastings along the way? I just don't want to give myself one more thing to do in the few days before the wedding and on the day of. I am thinking of keeping the set and just making it after the wedding at our leisure. I can't send it back because FH would be heartbroken lol.

Whiskey Ceremony
You can make it a ritual and taste after 1 week married, 1 month married, 6 months married, and then drink it all at 1 year! hehehe I mean I don't think it goes bad after the aging is done, I've had booze for over a year and it's been fine.
