No apt. needed, but you need a lot of time to wait in line! I was there for about an hour.

This is good to know because I have to do the same thing and I will at least make arrangements at my job and let them know. How about changing your name on your passports? Has anyone done that yet?

Re: Changing name on Social Security
Really that's strange because I was told by the post office that I will have to do it in person because of security purposes. I dont have to go any passport agency I can go to any main post offices to do it but I have to do it in person. It has to be a main post office not just any post office.

Re: Changing name on Social Security
SS took about 5 minutes. They have a name change form on their website so you can have it filled out before you get to the SS office.DMV is another story....took FOREVER although it did feel like playing bingo hoping for B49 to appear lol.

Re: Changing name on Social Security
I am planning on taking a day off from work and hopefully doing both the passport and social security. But if one takes a long time then I will have to do it another time. I can hold off on changing the name on the passport. But I want to do the social first. Do you think it's ok if i change the name on my social security card before i do it on my passport? I still have my New York State Identification Card with my maiden name on it if they need to see proof of identity. That is the last thing I am changing.

Re: Changing name on Social Security
I sent my passport in through the mail w/ my marriage license about a year ago. It took about a month to get it back with the certificate and changes. You can call them M-F 8:30-5:30 at:1-888-362-8668.
Good luck!

Re: Changing name on Social Security
So many people at these agencies tell you different things that I dont know what to believe anymore. I was told that I had to do everything in person. I also dont like the idea of sending my original documents out in the mail to all these agencies and they dont accept copies so I'll just do it in person.

clpunch - I got my certificate back. You can request dulpicate 'originals' from Town Hall. Then you don't have to worry about losing the one. Thats what I did, but I got everything back anyway with no problems.

bedda - you're fine waiting to change your passport unless you're flying internationally. If you have travel plans, do it sooner rather than later or make the reservation in your maiden name.Welcome New Vendors
