Chinese RH's...?

A friend of mine's getting married in a Chinese Reception Hall / restaurant in Flushing ... can anyone tell me what to expect? I tried googling it but came up with nothing relevant.

the food at the restaurant portion of the RH is 'traditional cantonese' ... what does that mean? will DH and I hate it since we're not used to it (and DH hates seafood)?

Thanks!

Re: Chinese RH's...?

LOTS OF FOOD!!!

chinese weddings are usually like 12 courses long! there is seafood...but there is also meat.

if you dont like one course, dont worry...there is another one coming soon.

and when all else fails...the last course is usually some delish fried rice

have fun!

Re: Chinese RH's...?

Hmmmm... no idea. I thought this post was going to be asking for recs for a Chinese RH and I was going to mention one on Queens Blvd. as the only one I know of. It's probably the one you're going to actually. This post doesn't help you at all, does it?

Re: Chinese RH's...?

Is it the place on Linden? If so, I was there once for a bridal shower. The food was good (i think!), but very traditional, not like take out (of course), but yes a lot of food!

Re: Chinese RH's...?

My friends went to a MASSIVE Chinese reception somewhere in Manhattan last year (over 600 people) and they told me they got pizza afterwards... bottom line, LOTS of food, nothing they liked. Now, they are very picky and not daring at all when it comes to food, but if you think you may fall into one of those categories, be prepared. I'd expect the worst and hope for the best - sorry so vague!!

Re: Chinese RH's...?

I love restaurants in Flushing. They are sssoo much more authentic, It's NOTHING like take-out chinese food, its awesome. I've been to one wedding at a chinese restaurant and it was really good. I think I remember shark-fin soup (well, they used fish, not actual shark fin, but used the same seasonings) being the most unusual thing. Maybe they'll have dim sum or duck lettuce wraps which are delish.

Re: Chinese RH's...?

I wouldn't wear red...not sure why lol but I heard it has some sort of connotation in Chinese culture and no one should wear it to a wedding. I might be wrong but I remember hearing that somewhere.

Re: Chinese RH's...?

Asked my good friend who goes to a million Chinese weddings and she said the food is fine there, its typical chinese banquet--the place needs renovations but she said its fine.

She actually told me the no-no color is white, NOT red. I never heard of red for a Chinese wedding but I've been to 2 Indian Weddings and we couldn't wear red to those!

Re: Chinese RH's...?

I went to 2 authentic chinese weddings. I believe there was 12-15 small courses...I was stuffed. Didn't dance. Just hours of sitting and eating.

Re: Chinese RH's...?

Red means good luck, prosperity, happiness & joy in chinese culture; a traditional chinese bride wears a red dress.

White is a mourning color and symbolizes death- its a color for funerals so its like wishing sadness on the couple for a guest to wear white.
