Destination Weddings - How much to spend on gift?

We are going to a wedding in the Caribbean and will be paying for our flights/hotels/food, etc. what do you think would be an appropriate amount to spend on a wedding gift?

It is supposed to be a formal wedding.

I would say about $100. The couple knows everyone is spending a lot to be there. I am sure they realize they will not be getting too much. But, if it is close family maybe a little more.

We still base our gift on the relationship to the bride & groom and our finances at the time. It may be a little lower if we travel, but not necessarily.

Do what you can afford. We ALMOST got married in Tobago, a small Island near Trinidad, and we told everyone not to vene bring gifts, just them being there was truly enough for us, we realized it would have been a huge expense. I would still bring a gift no matter what if I went to a destination wedding, but do what you can afford. We had our own wedding and three others right near ours, one was in Dallas, but we are now BROKE from flying to weddings, giving large amounts of cash plus our own wedding. Its crazy. Do what you can afford.

I would spend the same amount as if you were going to a wedding on Long Island.
