Did you tell your landlord you got married if you lived there before?

I know it's kind of a wierd question lol. I've been living at my current apartment for almost 5 years. FH used to stay over the majority of the week so obviously they see him and know him. They knew when we got engaged but the wife strikes me as the type who will raise my rent, again, if she knows he's living there permanetly, though of course she's gonna see him getting mail and stufff. I was the perfect tenant and oddly enough once he started staying over more, guess they heard the water for the showers, I got a letter saying how the because of the rising cost of utilites they needed to raise my rent...uhuh. Anyway, they're nice people and all but like when my toilet bowl broke it took him a week to fix and then instead of coughing up 80 bucks for a new bowl I had him and his son in my apartment for almost 7 hours fixing it. So should I just not even say anything. If they raised it another 100, we'll be moving then..We really don't feel like spending money to move plus we are getting a dog again this weekend so it will be really hard to find a place that accepts dogs.

Re: Did you tell your landlord you got married if you lived there before?

Honestly I think its fair for them to raise the rent if there is another person living there.

I have lived in many different apts and it was always stated the rent was for one person. My last LL before DH and I moved in together flat out said 'this is rent for you if you have someone else here a majority of the time then I'll raise the rent' and IMO the more people in an apt the more water, elec used and the more wear and tear on an apt.

Re: Did you tell your landlord you got married if you lived there before?

Yes, they came to the wedding in fact. But DH and I both lived there already. They did raise the rent at the beginning of this year, but I don't think it was because of the wedding. Did you sign a rental contract or anything? If so, it might say in there when and on what conditions they can raise the rent.

Re: Did you tell your landlord you got married if you lived there before?

Well... I'm not a landlord so it's super easy for me to quickly speak negatively of the cheap landlords that really skip out on doing things properly in an effort to save a buck. Heck I'd like to believe that even if I was a landlord I wouldn't want to cheap out on things!! I HATE that shiz!!!

I did tell my landlord but he lived there with me from the beginning so it was a very different situation for me.

I think it would be hard to conceal. are you changin your name? What about mail? etc? It might be best to just tell them. Or you can wait for them to ask you about it. If you are worried about them raising the rent again.... then try to keep it from them as long as you can. The other thing is, they already raised the rent for his being there all the time.. so can they really raise it again because of him?? Just doesn't seem to add up to me.

On the flip side... some apartments you pay your own gas electric and even water.

Its certainly right of them to raise the rent. You're lucky your utilities are included.

My mom is a landlord and she constantly gets screwed by tenants...they're not out to get you...but they're not out to lose on their investment. Oh and ETA, my water cost nearly doubled this year...so she isn't kidding about the rising costs...

Its a business just like everything else.

Some landlords I do believe are just out to make money and will stop at nothing to do so.

Case in point... my old landlord. We moved out because of an oil leak...a leak he tried to cover up and not fix. A toxic leak that he didn't care about our health over but more about the money in his pocket. He did not fix the leak... is now renting the apartment to another family for $100 more than we were paying!!! WITH THE LEAK STILL IN THE WALLS!!! GREAT JOB THERE ASSSHOLE!!!

So, I do not believe that ALL landlords are saints and do gooders. Sorry. I'm not at all saying your parents are like this... but there are DEF some really sleazy landlords out there!!!!

As far as raising the rent goes... I think it should be done if necessary. My current landlords are old as dirt... and their house is well paid off for many many many years now. I think they would have much less reasons to raise my rent... but sometimes taxes increase (we pay our own utilities). If the prices of everything go up so that the rent is no longer covering the cost of the apartment... then and only then should it be raised. I don't think it should be raised just for the sake of getting more money out of people. I don't think rent should be raised JUST because a new year hit (which happens to my friend each christmas and she gets notification in her Christmas card!!!). It should ONLY be done for a solid reason!!!

No, my utilites are not included. I pay my own gas and electric and we both work so I can't see where any excess wear and tear is coming in. Again, it's just my opinion. And who is to say I don't take 2 showers a day. They pay the water, but that comes with being a landlord. Are you then going to limit your tenants to how much they can bathe? I guess I'm used to people from my grandparents day who had the same tenants for like 20 something years and never raised their rent..Should I start withholding my rent since it took them excessively long to fix something like a toilet bowl that I use every day. I don't know, but most landlords seem to love to collect the money but do nothing else. Vent over lol.

Re: Did you tell your landlord you got married if you lived there before?

I never rented in a private house (always complexes) where the rent is the rent no matter how many people live there (although they did have limits - only 2 adults and a max of one child allowed in the one bedroom for example).

But - I did have a friend who rented a gate house on an estate up on the north shore. When she got engaged, the LL told her she was going to raise the rent because her fiance was staying over more often and that there would now be more showers. My friend told her 'don't worry -we ALWAYS shower together so the water bill won't increase!'

She moved out a month later!

you could withhold your rent but be ready to get evicted. You cant withhold rent cause it took them 'excessively long' to fix something. If you dont have a lease the LL has to right to raise the rent anytime they want and for any reason. This is their home (im guessing) so they can limit the apt to one person if they want, you are living in a persons home not a complex where things are very different. It is also very typical to get yearly rent increases.....so if you have been there for 5 years and have only had one rent increase consider yourself lucky.

This!! We've only had 2 in the past 5 years so when my LL said something in December (when our old lease agreement was up) I wasn't surprised. And if they raise it $100 a month, that's not much at all. It's MUCH less than the cost of moving!

I don't think it's that common really. I can give you a list of peolpe I know personally who are landlords and never raised the rent for their tenants just because. Me and my mother rented when I was in HS and we never raised until the very last year. Like Kerri said, if you want more money, you'll find any reason. And I never heard of a law where you can not limit who and who comes or stays over or the amount of guests you have..Those are control freaks..Oh well...

Really, so having a non-working toilet bowl for a week is liveable conditions?Where I had to actually go into the tank and manually get it to flush because they are so cheap they can't pay for a new one or for it to be properly repaired. And you are right, if it happens again I will withold rent. As far as raising rent, no actually it's not common. I can give you a list of peolpe I know pesonlly who are landlords and never raised the rent for their tennants just because. raising rent is typical when a lease runs out. I have been living on my own since 1991 and have been in 3 major cities and all apts almost always raised the rent when the lease was up. Renting an apt is a business deal nothing more nothing less.

and having to manually flush your toilet is an inconvenience yes but it still worked.

I honestly think its flat out rude to sneak your DH into your apt. I think you should be an adult and let them know and if they choose to raise the rent (which is their right since there is no lease) then you can decide to move or stay.

If I had a tenant that was lying to me about who was living there they would be on the curb before they even had chance to explain.

Can you tell me how I am sneaking in my husband when they see him all the time and they talk to him? Just curious. lol. If they ask, I'll tell them but until then I probably won't oh well. He isn't coming into my bedroom window late at night. Where I'm lying, since they never asked, I don't know. But it's your opinion, and I have a list of things they have done I find rude too. And luckily you're not my landlord so you don't have to worry about kicking me to the curb but thanks for telling me what you would have done. And just like you are posting your experience as a tenant, I'm posting mine where it is not common to raise rent yearly.

Vent over lol.

you could withhold your rent but be ready to get evicted.

Me and my mother rented for 7 years and we never raised until the very last year. Like Kerri said, if you want more money, you'll find any reason. And last time I checked by law you can not limit who and who comes or stays over or the amount of guests you have..Those are control freaks..

raising rent is typical when a lease runs out.

You find me to be lying, which I'm not, to be rude, ok your opinion, and I have a list of things they have done I find rude too. And luckily you're not my landlord so you don't have to worry about kicking me to the curb but thanks for telling me what you would have done.

you are the one who asked for opinions on if you should tell them or not and you made it sound like you were hiding the fact that he was there permanently living their now.

I gave you my opinion....thats what you asked for. If you don't like the opinion then don't take it.
